Hello! It's time for the first behind the scenes post.
So, do you want to know what mother's role was in the early version of the comic? Will you believe me when I say that she wasn't in the comic at all.
It's so crazy to think about now, she's so important to spotted bun's motivations, how buns found out about the beast under the pit... everything! I think I was actually already drawing Chapter III, and I still hadn't come up with mom.
The reason for her eventual creation was spotted bun's motivations. I couldn't figure out why spot would stay, knowing a way out and that it was safe to eat there. I guess you could say that it was a safe home for them, but it just didn't feel right. I didn't want spotted bun to have any attachment to the burrows at all. But what would make spot stay?
An elderly mother who can't move anymore! YES! It felt perfect, and it also fixed my struggle to figure out how they found out about what's at the end of the pit. I was going to have them crawl into the pit itself to look for brother, haha. That wouldn't have worked at all and I knew it. Mother fixed it all!
One last tidbit: I was originally going to have mother die by the other rabbits throwing her into the pit without it being feeding time. They were suspicious about the rabbit who never joins feeding time. It didn't make sense and made the other rabbits more malicious than they are, I really don't think they'd ever throw someone into the pit as a punishment. And I don't think the other rabbits notice or care if someone joins feeding time or not!
That's it! I hope it was interesting. Next time I'll talk about how the beginning of the comic changed from how it first was.
