I think the concept of horcruxes is largely inspired by the One Ring from Lord of the Rings. The parallels are pretty obvious. A precious object the Dark Lord has poured his soul into in order to become more powerful. But more than that, when the Sauron is defeated, both at the end of the Second Age with the War of the Last Alliance and when the Ring is destroyed at the end of the Third Age by Gollum, (and several other times actually) Sauron is reduced to "a mere spirit of malice that gnaws itself in the shadows," according to Gandalf, and at the end of the story when the a Ring is destroyed, he's described as a massive black cloud that rises from Barad Dur that is blown away to the east. That's very similar to how Voldemort describes himself when he's in that mist form. Now, Sauron is truly immortal as opposed to Voldemort's pseudo immortality through his horcruxes, but I think the effect is the same, and also the exact opposite at the same time. When Voldemort is in the mist form, his soul is trying to die, unable to take physical form. When Sauron is in his mist form, he is slowly regaining power towards being able to rebuild a physical form. Both of them do eventually regain a physical body. Yes, Sauron has a body in Lord of the Rings. He's not a flaming eye.

The Diary contained fully half of Voldy’s soul; each subsequent contained half of what remained… Need to increase the math budget…
