I think Malfoy's biggest attribute is his ability to exert 'soft power' - over the ministry, over the Hogwarts school board, over the shopkeepers etc. Everybody knew that he was a death eater, with tons of money and powerful friends, but nobody *knew* so he was able to walk among the non-death eaters, persuading the ministry that no, of course voldemort wasn't back, until it was undeniable - even after Cedric's death! Convincing Fudge (probably) to put Umbridge in place, and forbidding any discussion of it, or learning practical defensive magic etc. Yes, Malfoy was bad at actual 'death eater stuff' but politically, and socially, he was probably, actually, a quite influential member of the group.

2025-02-09 08:32:44 +0000 UTCI think the main difference is that the Malfoy's are dedicated to Voldemort's cause (power, pure-blood supremacy, aristocracy), whereas Barty is dedicated to Voldemort himself, which goes beyond the cause. Basically, Lucius sees himself as a loyal servant to uphold Voldemort's reign, while Barty sees himself as a son to support and do anything for Voldemort. The latter goes a lot farther
