The Owlery - How Does The Imperius Curse Work

Great question and I really liked your answers and analogies to other types of magic! I’d love to hear a Death Eater hierarchy based on intelligence, strategy, skill, etc especially since Bellatrix, Snape, Barty, and Lucius would all appear to be very high but usefulness wavers based on their motivations and not being in Azkaban. Mulciber is the one who specializes in the Imperius Curse and forced people to do horrible things in the first Wizarding War according to Karkaroff’s trial - makes you wonder what he did to Mary that made Lily so upset when she brought it up to Snape….

I agree with your part about it would be specific about jumping on the desk, though of course Barty Crouch Jr is pretending to be Mad -Eye and can’t make Harry do anything too drastic to arouse suspicion

2024-12-01 14:44:27 +0000 UTCAlso, I just thought of another (totally unrelated) “What If” question: What if Ron never came back in the Deathly Hallows?? Either because he felt too guilty for leaving them (Harry & Hermione) in the first place or because he just couldn’t find them for some reason … ?? 🤔

2024-12-01 14:37:35 +0000 UTCI think in Harry & Moody/Barty Croch Jr.’s case, Harry would have jumped on the table only once, BUT IF Moody/BCJ had said, “I want Harry to KEEP jumping on & off the table until I say so/come back in the room”, then Harry would KEEP doing that until he passes out/BCJ came back … Honestly, I think it’s kinda like the child’s game “Simon Says”. Like if Simon says jump on one foot, kids HAVE to keep jumping on one foot UNTIL Simon says stop—at least, that’s how I played as a child. BUT, on the flip side, IF you don’t say “Simon says” before you say jump on one foot, then you DON’T have to do the thing … And, on same coin, you could say “Simon says jump on one foot only ONCE”, then the kids/people would do that only once … Does that make any sense at all? 🥹

2024-12-01 14:36:20 +0000 UTCI really like the Diablo 2 bot analogy for how the spell works. When I first read the HP series (this past summer, actually!), my mind immediately went to what Dungeons and Dragons spells are the equivalent to HP spells. The Imperius Curse to me would be Dominate Person, where it works much like what you were explaining. You can issue a general command that the target will follow to the best of its ability, or you can take more precise control and manipulate the target like a puppet, just requiring more concentration. Awesome question and wonderful answers! I look forward to the Owlery every week!
