The Owlery - Can You Transfigure an Animagus?

In the movies Ron try’s to transfigure Scabbers into a goblet, but it’s unclear if this doesn’t work because his wand is broken or because he is a human. The real question is Could Hermione have transfigured Rita Skeeter into a button? (They learn how to transfigure Beetles to Buttons in year 2)

oh the "body swap" idea that you and the animal swap places. The way i imagine it is something like that. The body changes or swaps, which includes the brain, the the ability to process information would be depending somewhat on the animal form but it still holds your own soul. What happens to the animal body when youre a human and the other way around? It makes me think of the question " where do vanished objects go?" Into nonexistence, which more or less would be the same as the concept of some ethereal plane like you guys discussed.

I feel like one of the main subtleties of Animagi vs Transfiguration that you two also touched on is (1) Transfiguration can take a longer time like Slughorn becoming a chair and doing finishing touches, (2) Animagi can change form at will, (3) if you are Transfigured, I don't think there's a lot that a student or even most adult wizards could do about it. I think you are alive but if you were Transfigured into a ferret or a button, you couldn't change back unless you had the nonverbal wandless magical abilities to do it which obviously Draco doesn't. McGonagall restores table legs, Neville's leg (I think), and Draco to human form... I think if someone managed to transform her into something, she could definitely transform herself back because of her power and specialty, but maybe not even say an adult wizard who maybe struggled with Transfiguration or who hasn't excelled at wandless magic and therefore they stay that object until they are Transfigured back. Not sure about aging and dying... good question!

So if you sit on “armchair Slughorn” can he get hurt by you sitting on him? 😅 And Lupin saying, “We were just having a little chat, Peter … ” was just kinda for “show”, like for dramatic effect. At least, that’s how I always read it as. So, yes, I DO think you get to keep your human mind as an animagus. Same with “shark 🦈 head Krum”; like he doesn’t bite Hermione, he just bites down on the rope … Whereas if his mind WAS a shark 🦈 mind, I think he would have just bite Hermione, not knowing who she is in that moment, & not the rope! 😅

It's so interesting how people think of Animagi and Transfiguration and broomsticks (with or without handles) and souls. Your idea makes sense to me too, but I also never thought of it like that either lol

Such an interesting question. I think you guys did get to the right answer. The way I think of the animagus is less spirit animal are more so like you’ve got an “internal skin” that you’re swapping to. As gross as it sounds, it’s like you’re turning yourself inside out. As for the injury side of things, it would be as if the internal skin is only penetrable to a certain depth whereas your outside skin is fully penetrable. No clue if that makes sense but it does in my head lol
