The Owlery - Can You Transfigure an Animagus?
Added 2024-10-27 12:00:05 +0000 UTCIn the movies Ron try’s to transfigure Scabbers into a goblet, but it’s unclear if this doesn’t work because his wand is broken or because he is a human. The real question is Could Hermione have transfigured Rita Skeeter into a button? (They learn how to transfigure Beetles to Buttons in year 2)

Bit late but I thought I’d mention the whole point of an animagus is that you can transform back by yourself, but if you transfigured yourself into an animal (not animagus) there would be no way to get yourself back without another witch/wizard putting you back. This is why Krum only partially transfigured himself, so he could still do spells (probably non-verbal spells).

2024-10-28 01:28:18 +0000 UTCI’m so excited that one of my questions got chosen!! But now I’ve started thinking, would transfiguring an animagus into an object “hurt”? (I put hurt in quotes because it’s not the word I want to use, but I don’t know what word would better fit my question) I’ll try to explain; When Bellatrix kills the fox, she expects it to turn back into a witch or wizard. So how badly does one have to be hurt to automatically transform back to human form. When fighting werewolf-Lupin, does Sirius chose to transform back or is he so injured that he just reverts back to human automatically? So then,if Hermione transfigured Rita into a button, would Rita be (1) able to transform back to human or would she be stuck as a button until Hermione untransfigures her or (2 back to my first thought) would Rita being a button “hurt” and her consciousness be like I need to breathe and automatically turn her back to human?

2024-10-27 15:33:56 +0000 UTCI was kinda hoping you would get to one of my questions this week. My birthday is on Halloween Thursday. I was being born while Harry was fighting the troll. Oh well no luck maybe next week.

2024-10-27 14:57:29 +0000 UTCI am so excited to get to Goblet of Fire - even hearing some brief thoughts in the Owlery or your videos is great. Even in the first chapter we're learning about the Killing Curse, a bit of Voldemort's back story, where Harry will end up after the Tournament before we've set up Porkeys, the mention of a faithful servant who is not Peter and key to Voldemort's plan, Bertha Jorkins, Frank Bryce, and the idea that Harry dreamed it all and his scar hurting and the Horcrux-y implications. A lot happens in just the first chapter and it just builds from there. Great Owlery episode as always - happy to be here!

2024-10-27 14:29:17 +0000 UTCI really like J's explanation of the astral plane/spirit animal for Animagi. I agree with that because Animagi can transform at will and both Sirius and Peter are entirely aware of each other even as animals and (Peter is constantly scratching and biting at Ron to get away when Sirius is running over, which) I think you'd need the rat instincts and smelling and maybe feeling or hearing Sirius' paws hitting the ground as well as Peter's mind like "oh no, oh no, I know those paws. oh no, is that the cat too? I'M OUT OF HERE" to think about running away. I also agree with the explanation of harm not being transferred from human to animal form otherwise why couldn't their spirit animals just transcend death? So yeah, human dies, Animagi spirit animal dies too. We also think Bellatrix thought by killing a fox and nudging it might turn it back to Auror form in Half Blood Prince when her and Narcissa visit Snape at Spinner's End so that tracks. And why hadn't anyone figured that one before. Love the idea of an unhinged moments video. I think some great contenders could be Voldemort, Dumbledore, Snape, Hermione, Bellatrix, Barty Crouch Jr, Fudge, Sirius, and Umbridge

2024-10-27 14:17:12 +0000 UTCSo if you sit on “armchair Slughorn” can he get hurt by you sitting on him? 😅 And Lupin saying, “We were just having a little chat, Peter … ” was just kinda for “show”, like for dramatic effect. At least, that’s how I always read it as. So, yes, I DO think you get to keep your human mind as an animagus. Same with “shark 🦈 head Krum”; like he doesn’t bite Hermione, he just bites down on the rope … Whereas if his mind WAS a shark 🦈 mind, I think he would have just bite Hermione, not knowing who she is in that moment, & not the rope! 😅
