Yes I think Binns could and should be an escort. There is a term in military tactics named, "Tripwire Force". It's there to defend an area until other forces can be sent or keep an enemy occupied for a retreat by others. That's what he could do. As a ghost, he can take full force gaze while students run & not die. I think all of the ghosts should have been employed in this.
