They are getting detention for being in the middle of the night by themselves. Malfoy probably got fewer points because he was with a teacher. It is odd Hagrid doesn't attempt to explain to McGonagle what they are doing, but I guess he knows he’d then be in a lot of trouble. As for the Forrest, it's only out of bounds to students entering on their own, Hagrid says they are safe if they are with him. Sure it's a bit odd they having detention with the person they were helping but McGonagle didn't know that when she gave them detention and Hagrid has decided not to say anything because he knows the trouble he would be in. Maybe he volunteered to do the detention because he knows he’s partly to blame. I don't understand why you say it's all his fault. The reason they have detention isn't because of Hagrid’s dragon, the dragon was gone by the time Filtch found them. They were the ones who forgot the cloak, they blamed themselves for that, not the dragon.
