Feedback on modding (poll)
Added 2023-08-01 11:39:01 +0000 UTCHey folks,
me again. Yep it's quick, but I have a question, I'd like answered.
First a bit of background information though.
So, I am looking into how to create maps and such and work on an editor. Work goes pretty well and it has some advantages and disadvantages.
The biggest advantage for everyone, is that it creates data driven content. This means, that other people can access that content and modify it.
Depending on the level, of access, you could make a completely different game that way.
Here comes the question though: Should I?
Here is a summation of the process.
Reasons to make my own editor:
- modding the game and letting people create their own content
- relatively easy for me to use those tools to add my content
- tools are already developed or in development and don't seem to take too long
- the alternative (using the room editor of GMS2) is a bit messy with importing tilemaps
Reasons not to make my own editor
- does the game need modding? (probably not)
- I'm pretty much re-creating the GMS2 room editor
- time spent on editors isn't spent on making content
- exporting data isn't frictionless either and the tilemap import might actually be cleaner
Ultimately I haven't made my decision yet and will work on the editor (or commissions, if I'm done early) anyway.
So let me know what you want. Do you want me to make editors for my game or not?
PS: Just as a disclaimer. The final decision lays with me. This poll is more to get feedback on what users want.

To be honest, it is now or never. Right now I develop the tools and build the foundation. Modding would only use the same tools, I use to make content in the first place.

I voted for don't, though it depends. If you can potentially transfer this to a later game where modding fits better then the work may be worth it, else I think it might be better to go with the tools that'd been given, even if they're a bit messier in some aspects.
