KOD Final Thoughts/discussion

We just finished our first full season review- can we get a little commotion for the commentary? Also thank you guys so much for the support especially when I'm reviewing a lesser known show.

I think for a first season they did a lot right and a few things very wrong.

The pros for me would be the identity of the show and the judging. I think Murray Hill does a great job showing attention to each contestant. The judges panel similarly didn't waste time with nonsensical critiques that are hard to understand. They gave honest opinions and sound advice. Even if I didn't agree with opinion I always agreed with the advice. This brings us to the ultimate pro which is the identity of the show.

Revery has done a great job separating King of Drag from every other drag television series; it feels cosy and casual in a way the other drag shows feel anxious and dramatic. Coming from watching DragRace for the last decade I initially thought this was a con but after a few episodes I came to love the way Murray treats the cast like a real family. It's very cheesy but it's works- the show leans into the cheese. So, if you like cheese- you'll love this show.

And now the cons...

The show is cheesy and I like cheese but not all the time. KOD had a very emotionally driven cast and that's not something they could've predicted. On a show like this the cast sets the tone so, the show feels very emotional which gets boring and repetitive. There was a lot of unprovoked crying and while valid it gets uncomfortable to watch in a competition.

My biggest con is that the show fully lost all sense of competition toward the end. It really started to feel like summer camp and I think it's because of the previous stuff I mentioned but also because the winner was clear from day one.

Molasses was clearly going to win the whole time imo, and the rest of the cast didn't bring it enough to keep me as invested as I could have been. It felt like everybody knew molasses was going to win. Which is understandable but don't let that show when you're competing on TV. This also could be the producers fault for not casting more drag kings like molasses. That's the nicest way I could put that.

Which brings me to the last con. Dick, Molasses and Henlo were the only kings that seemed like they did this for a living. I know that's a complete assumption and not based on much but...that's how it felt. They also end up being the top three so that also sucked any tension or stakes that could've been in this season.

Again there was a lot done right and a lot done wrong which is more than I can say for other shows. What do y'all think?

I forgot about the final thrust. Yeah they need to replace that with anything else

Ya Motha

I want to like it but I keep thinking about how Dragula s1 was low budget but good and if I'm going to be fair then I can't hand out pity points just because I want to support the larger community. I'll take a s2 because the bones are there for a good show, but they need to tighten up on the casting and production. Not necessarily the budget but it was crunchy in places where it really shouldn't have been (final thrust is the biggest non contestant offender here).
