Scholar Class Thoughts
Added 2024-08-06 21:21:23 +0000 UTCNow that Gen Con is over, I feel like I have time to collect my thoughts and decompress. I didn't even attend, but having the physical copies of the Wandering Blades quickstart out in the wild really stressed me out!
I've settled on something potentially radical compared to the other classes: I think the scholar won't have techniques of their own.
Like all of the other classes, I want players to have access to every class feature from the start (with room to grow more powerful). This aligns with the cinematic/episodic/one shot nature of the game.
From the start, the scholar will have a series of supporting class features such as the ability to analyze opponents and recall knowledge. They will also need to pick a scholarly path that comes with unique features. So far, these paths include:
Apothecary - medicines and poisons
Inner Medicine - applying conditions and healing through acupoint strikes
Investigation - invoking narrative truths (this one is my least developed)
Tactician - combat bonuses and learning techniques from other classes
I think this makes the scholar class just as versatile as the youxia and outlaw, while facilitating a lot of cool roleplay and alignment with genre tropes!
