Announcing "Cutting Room Floor"

Hello friends, how's going your week?
We Are working on many things at the same time, but we are really happy with the result. The Mounted Heroes of the next months are coming out very nice, the giant Crocodile Boss is becoming more Epic every few hours and many weapons for the fighters had already been sculpted.
Next month is going to be epic, we wanted to make sure that even if Francesca is launching AMAZONS! Kickstarter we are not making a less powerful Patreon set!

The "Cutting Room Floor"

We are discussing the idea of new content, called Cutting Room Floor!
Being 100% honest with you, we want feedbacks to make we implement this in the best way possible. It could be a New Tier or either a free folder inside the regular release.
The Cutting Room Floor will include any test and extra variants we make during the creative process, even if it's not 100% related with the Set.
Some examples: an extra version of an hero with an alternate pose that we have not choosen as final; an extra modular model with a pose and a special helmet we decided to not use; some extra weapons; a crazy version of one character in a funny version. All these extra pieces will be exported and cleaned as for the regular releases, so all of them will be strong and printable.

Now, if we want to upgrade these extra poses and elements to something that stands out like  the rest of the STLs, they could be implemented as extra stuff for hipotetic Adventuer - Cutting Room Floor and  Merchant - Cutting Room Floor Tiers.

Please let us know your opinion in the comments :)

EDIT:
Based on the comments it's obvious that you prefer to have these models in a separated folder free for all patrons, so let's do that :)
It's a great idea because these extra versions and experiments some time worried us to not being balanced with the rest of the sets, and now can see the light of the day.
We will not make fake Cutting Room Floor STLs of course, but if we happen to have those we will just upload those in the folder. Thanks for your opinions!

Our friend Greg make an interesting video about a new resin that should be not toxic, please take your time to check that, we are all in to support less toxic material for our favourite hobby!

Cheers!

Whatever happened with this?

Jim Johnson

Hope you guys include the old school Wulfhog rider and the original Giantslayer with the barrel. Id love to see some of those.

Arcanacast

Some intense opinions here... It sounds like these cutting room floor models would require extra work. I have to admit that I would LIKE more models at no additional cost, but it's also not fair to just expect you to give that to us. You are already producing some of the best models, and your patreon is a pretty great value. No one should expect you to do extra work for them for free. I'm sure you guys are aware that some people are of the opinions that artists' time is not valuable and people demand free work from artists all the time. Don't let those kinds of people bully you into thinking that ANY of your time or work should be free. I think there are 3 reasonable options that are fair to you and your patrons: 1) A new tier: so that people don't feel left out, I wouldn't make this much more expensive, and I wouldn't put too much stuff into it. Maybe an alternate head without hair or with a more plain expression from before you 'posed' the face (if that's how it works). Maybe a more plain version of a sword from before embellishments. I do agree with keeping tiers pretty simple though, so this wouldn't be my pick. 2) Bundle it and sell it for a few bucks. If people want it, they can get it. They aren't stuck paying for something they might not end up wanting and no one feels like they missed out on what someone else got--it's all there equally available, you know exactly what you can get, and it's cheap. 3) Don't do it. If people are gonna get upset about it or it will be controversial, just don't do it.

Sam Kay

when are these tiers going live

Jimbob Jimminy

I don't believe Greg is associated with them. He just does test prints sometimes since they don't have a printer.

Julio Ibarra

I'm down for this.

Gary-Martin Watts

All right, hate to be that guy, but I am not a fan of the video you send. The content is mediocre, the quality and density of information is rather low... Plus, Greg has been agressively pushing his YouTube channel everywhere he could. I don't know if he is a personal friend of yours, but his channel wouldn't be my first choice by far for informations about 3d printing.

Moutet Pierre

If it was a choice between free "not so perfect" sculpts and paid for additional models - I'm happy to pay. I already feel like I'm robbing you with how great the models you produce are and I'm always happy to support creators that engage with the community. Additionally, people are always going to cry when they don't get things for free. Personally, don't give them away. Add them to your store - you worked on the models, you deserve to be paid for that time.

DungeonTokens

If all else and you want could always put it as a vote with ideas on the decisions you all are leaning towards and see the public's opinion more.

WarjackedsWorkshop

I know there's alot saying they'd rather not see you all put work into stuff that didn't make "the cut" and they're saying about adding them in free to what's released already to me we're getting a heck of alot more for the value than what others would charge for what you're putting out. Think I'd rather see like it was suggested the models be put in the store as a bundle and let the Patreon backers get them with the discount code. As nice as it'd be as extra freebies you all are spoiling with a crap load of them as is and hitting extra stretch goals time and again. I'd rather not see you all undercut yourselves too much.

WarjackedsWorkshop

The Cutting Room Floor idea is great and I'm glad it looks like it'll be a freebie to patreons. You are awesome!

As someone in the Merchant tier I like it because it offers me the opportunity to sell some unique miniatures, but I agree that it isn’t fair overall to the others paying for the right to these awesome miniatures. I think it would be fine to add these to current tiers or just a free grab bag.

Michael Warren

I love the idea of the alternate poses and equipment that didn't make the cut. What might not be good enough to make the final 4 might be good enough for many others. Hope there will be some dynamic poses like jumping attacks or shield bash/charge or in future with spell casters maybe eyes closed casting epic spells. But if you do want to make some extra money, maybe you can do a weapons/shield/spells/wings pack release later and sell at your shop with discount for patreons. The good part with the modular hands is that they are easily interchangeable. While giving ideas, That imp on Wappellious looked so good. Hope you can do a Familar release one day, male/female imp, Pseudo Dragon, Quasit, various animal. But I'm guessing this would be hard as they are all not very similar.

demonwombatofdoom

honestly keep doing what your doing.

troy

I love the idea of alternative poses, especially funny ones! And seeing what you pros thought wasn’t the best ideas, fantastic! I think either open it up to all appropriate pledges or add new pledge tiers. I am not in favor of having to buy them separately.

Jim Johnson

We do get a discount in their store. The first 10 days of every month there is a code for a percentage off of anything on their MyMiniFactory.

Paul West

I’m open to seeing what you guys have, and how it fits my budget. I can’t agree with many here, who think “I’m already a patron, so I should get everything you sculpt” I hope you are holding back on us a little, so you can do kickstarters and exclusives and stuff. If it’s a few bucks more, and we get a few extra poses and variety, I dig it. I’ll support regardless what you decide.

Dickie Lierman

Honestly it's really fine to have them for free in the pack. Almost always we end up doing tests that doesn't see the light of the day, so it's better for everyone to just have them for free (in a folder called Cutted Room Floor, to not mix with the final models).

Artisan Guild

Agree with the paid upgrade packs. You should totally get paid for the work you do. But I also think we should get a discounted price rate in your store.

Jeffrey Curry

I too would pay an extra couple bucks per month to not have to spend hours on supports. Some of the models have TONS of islands regardless of how you orientate them. I just haven't had nearly as much time to print all these wonderful models that I wish I did.

Wil

To be honest it does not seem something I’d be interested in, but no problems with you doing an extra funding level to include the models.

Patick Grey

Commenting after the update to the post... While I would love for it to be added free to the current tiers (this would be my vote), if you want to have these extra pieces make some money, please go with Danny Lloyd's idea of creating bundles now and then that could be purchased (call them "Upgrade Packs" to make them sound better and not cast offs that didn't make the grade :) ). Maybe even have a discount code for patrons? But still, my preference would be for them to be free to us. ;)

Doug Yount

I'd love to do more test prints, that would be something I am very interested in.

Steve Howland

Just realised my comment idea was already in the original post. Sorry, my bad!

SteveWasEre

OK I see a re-worked post I think it should be included in the current Patreon, This Patreon is already a great value, and this would add EVEN more to that. And no confusion and nobody missing out on any models! :)

Greg Kourakos

Hello Will, thanks for your honest feedback, that was much needed. We edited our post including the possibility to include the Cutting Room Floor SLTs for free (without spending extra time polishing to perfection those extra poses). So it's just extra content. Let me know how you see that :)

Artisan Guild

Hello Daniel, we are happy to have any kind of opinions. We edited our post including the possibility to include the Cutting Room Floor SLTs for free (without spending extra time polishing to perfection those extra poses). So it's just extra content. Let me know how you see that :)

Artisan Guild

I think this causes some confusion and feel like the current situation is about as perfect as a Patreon can get, don't mess with it! :)

Greg Kourakos

This is interesting... Ill have to see what all is included before i decide to make the jump. one thought that i did have as i was supporting models the other night is that that whole process is a pain in the butt!!! I don't know if this would go anywhere or not but i would be willing to pay a few extra bucks a month for pre custom supported models (not a auto support type setting but some time spent making sure that everything is supported correctly and precisely so that i can just print the models i would like and not spend 30+ minutes per model going through them to maybe get a success. Just a thought i was having as i was sitting at the computer. Anyone else think this could be a good idea?

Ryan

I don't really mind, though if it's just about getting use of extra material why not have it as another patron goal and add it as an extra folder in the monthly drop. Just a thought, though I do think having extra tiers is totally reasonable, a lot of Patreons do it.

SteveWasEre

Is there anyone here who genuinely doesn’t think they get great value for a mere $10/month??? It’s not about the overall success of the Patreon it’s about what you get for ten bucks. I hate penalising success it’s crazy.

Alex Varley

I have to say that I am also not a fan of this concept. While you guys have done a phenomenal job of being clear and honest with us it comes across as a cash grab. I am all for you being paid for your work and model alternates sound really cool but would hate to see people leave because they feel like they’re being nickel and dimes. This is one of the reasons so many people have stopped buying video games with micro transactions in them. I want to reiterate that my perception is that is not the case based upon how you’ve run your Patreon up to this point but when you’ve been so successful and inclusive it is possible to be taken the wrong way.

Kilroy

I'm kinda torn, because on one hand, I totally want more cool stuff, on the other, I think I'd rather have it as something we can buy as good packs. Somethings (like the humans!) I totally want as many options for, others, not so much. Also, this way, we can pick and choose, and see what we are getting (in theory). I like Danny's idea.

Ravyn Schmidt

Yup, not a fan of this AT ALL. So for all the patrons that have been here to build you up, you're going to ask us to pay MORE to get the stuff you decided wasn't good enough for us, but good enough to ask more money for? Nope. I strongly hope you reconsider this idea, it's mighty shady.

Wil

this is true, but in no time artists from thingverse and other projects would just use parts of our sculpts. It already happens now, it's hard to protect our designs :(

Artisan Guild

The people who have access to certain files early are beta testing the prints. There's work going on behind the scenes which is helping to get clean files into the final release, and raise the quality bar overall by providing direct feedback in regards to the sculpts and the printing process. Andrea and Francesca don't have a 3D printer, and come from a background of making miniatures for a molding process, so this feedback is super helpful. I understand your feels, but do know that at least in my regard, I take it as a serious responsibility.

Elle Heilig

Exactly what I was thinking, Patrons are already supporting this work. If there is quality control and testing I'm happy with that but if the work is being released but only available to some (even if it doesn't make the final grade) it will make people feel like thieve lost out.

I love the idea - previously these files just wouldn't be released to anybody. This gets them out into the world. It's like dessert, or the deleted scenes of a movie.

Elle Heilig

+1 to Danny Lloyd's idea on the 'reject' bundle every few months for a few quid ! :)

David Holt

If you're already doing the same amount of work on your 'rejects' then I'm not a huge fan of this idea. Lots of Patreons suffer from FOMO from their patrons causing them to leave altogether. It may be better to bundle things up occasionally and sell them as a one off purchase for a few quid instead of making it a new tier. Also, there's a lot less clarity as to what someone would be actually receiving in that tier every month so it confuses things a bit

Hmm... This does sound cool, and I'm for sure interested to see what these bonuses are (I'm very sure they'll be epic, like all your other stuff!), and especially what the extra cost will be to get them. It does feel a bit like maybe this should just be a random bonus to the normal 'adventurer tier' every now and then though ("oh hey, so we did something randomly cool for fun"), rather than a full new tier

Joey D

Not digging this idea considering some individuals already have access to such "early files" etc. I also feel that this diminishes the current pledges.

Casey Gomez

I can see people upset they don't get access to that, but honestly, if it's not a limited tier, I'm excited for it. I love all the stuff you folks do, so I'd be happy for extra poses, normally I'm not a fan of multiple poses for the same model, but I can see them being useful with many of the models you produce.

Sean Croteau

I am sure it will worth!!! What about more modular options? (torso, arms, legs, helmet/head), it would increase a lot the options of making many different miniatures

Bernat Rovira Lastra

You can make sure that the other tiers will not get anything less (extra models, goals, bosses, extra weapons etc). For sure we don't want the regular tiers to be anything less

Artisan Guild

Hm not really a fan of this. I'll wait to see how much it is before decisong.

Julio Ibarra

Was going to ask the same thing

Thomas Stalhood

What are we looking at for pricing for these tiers?
