2 of 4 Depth Ones Modular Models
Added 2019-07-09 19:50:58 +0000 UTC
Hello guys! we wanted to share with you some new progress pictures of the next month releases!
If someone doesn't know what we are talking about, we had a Poll and poeple voted for "Depth Ones", inspired by the infamous Mind Flayers.
The Set will be a huge one as always, and there will be Modular Models like every month.
Those two are part of that modular unit, with a selection of weapons including Daggers, Staves, Poison vials and casting hands.
EDIT: we are making Casting Hands (as separated parts like swappable weapons).
Thanks for helping us with your comments!

FX sculpts for spells are fun but tricky to do right. always needs to be on its own so they can be printed with clear resin or tinted ones depending on the effect you want to achieve. :) That or just all out hand paint the magic fire and energy be damned the see through resin hehe.

If hands are modular, why not both? A couple of options with spells, a couple empty. :D

I vote for tangible spells to paint! The idea of the hand with a peg I like it!

Right now I am imagining using this one with the dual daggers as a Cthuluan Psionic Rogue type against my players in my Pathfinder game... And I love it...

Personally, I am feeling more of a Darth Vader using the Force Choke open hand style, or like both hands open, palms up like they are using psionics to lift a heavy object...

I agree with Michael Brown.
A peg hole for different spells would be great!

Hand casting a Giant tentacle xD or a spread tentacles

Floating dr strange tunes would be cool. But how they are now is amazing. I back a bunch of different patterns for models and ya guys quickly became my favorites. The models are awesome and how you run your Patreon model is really satisfying too!

also as far as magic casting hand models, there is the psi-blade (soul knife) discipline, or Order of the Wu Jen use elemental spells, or some floating Dr. Strange style rune circles floating around the head of a staff or Replaceable hand model's wrist would be DOPE!

I'm in awe, absolutely amazing! I support several modelers and I have to say you and cast-n-play are the top two on the platform. The modular hands, cleaned and repaired models, sized properly, and the amazing details are all very appreciated. I love how you don't have higher tiers for extra money for "large" mini and provide them as a bonus for loyalty, you make supporting you feel like a reward rather than a rip off. I will be a supporter for life. The only thing cast-n-play does that would be nice here is they provide stl's with supports that have been tested to print properly. but honestly that is a non-issue for all we get. Keep up the amazing work!

Love the sculpts possibly one without the high back collar and in a sneaky pose as if about to attack the party from the shadows. Would like hands in casting poses and possible with swirling energy around the hands/arms or something that might just be energy that could be added to the miniature after printing. A psychic blade extending from a hand would be cool, [printed in a transparent resin with some inking would look great [or LED effects for those that can] . Hands could have ball(s) of energy in them to show manifesting powers or a symbol of energy off the forehead of a figure. Maybe something similar to how the recent Doctor strange [TM] had patterns/disks around the hands to show effects of magic? Possible have a wand or rod in a hand as something different. Just some ideas off the top :) I really think that the skull on the belt looks great, armor is very nice and intricate. Possible an option with robes only and maybe just bracers. This set really is going to be just amazing and its been wonderful to watch it develop!

Maybe the best way to do it would be empty hands and empty hands with a peg hole then you could do a couple of spell effects with pegs. Gives people the custom options for these and future projects (any spellcaster could have a casting peg hand)

There is also a Mind Flayer Arcanist in the 5E monster manual. Only real physical "spell effects" I would see being used would be shocking grasp and lighting bolt. Maybe ray of enfeeblement.
I would like to see an alternate head/hand combo with some type of effect coming off the head. I am just like John Snow when it comes to 3d modeling though so disregard if not possible.

Damn these look good! I never liked Mind Flayer models, now I know why, the other sculpts I've seen were inferior!

I'm neutral on the open hands vs. spell effects, however if you go with open hands might I suggest a Kids in the Hall "I'm crushing your head" hand . Ex. https://imgur.com/gallery/zYA62DW

Hello Wil, thanks for your feedback!
From the beginning we wanted to make something like mind flayers who make their equipment with chitins from the various monsters of the underdark. Umber Hulks, ankheg, giant worms and other arthropod and insect like monstruosities from the depths :)

Mind flayers are known to be psionic so I would prefer empty casting hands. If the hands were universal, I would consider, but Depth Ones look to have more clawed and 4 fingered hands. So they wouldn't be a mix and match hand to use for other races. So again, empty is my choice.

Spellcaster hands need several different gestures: some spells require the caster to point at the target (according to D&D description), I always imagined the fireball cast with outstretched fingers and palm toward the target, and of course we all know how the lightning is cast - the way Emperor Palpatine does it, all fingers pointed at the target.

Until you mentioned mind flayers I figured they were more Lovecraftian, ie deep ones but cool. Looking very cool though.
As to the open hand vs spell effect, well I'm greedy, I'd like to see both, but I the open hand look with floating objects or crumpled enemies would be incredible too.

I would love some spell effects as well as empty hands making some sort of motion. The sculpts look amazing.

I vote for empty hands, and I may be nit picking here, but a more bulbous end to the head, less pointed would be more in line with the species. Also perhaps a more...natural staff? Mindflayers live under ground, not in the ocean, so they probably wouldn't have access to sea creatures to make staffs with. More like tree roots and gems.

As far as spells, I like the hand pose with fingers and palms out, like shooting something from its hands.. If you have a palm up kind of pose, you could have something coming out of it.. Really like these sculpts!!

Illithid are psionic. Putting spell effects in their hands seems off.

Definitely go with some tangible spells for the hands, as well as empty. Even if Mindflayers don't typically cast traditional magic, I don't think about is going to get upset about some badass spell hands.
