Let issue 8 commence!!

Introducing the Tandraxian Nomad Star! A Nomad Star is a concept formed by combining three theoretical physics ideas, those being the shkadov thruster, the caplan thruster and the Dyson swarm. I fused them all together to form a pretty rad looking Tandrax megastructure. The idea is that this mega structure is capable of flying an entire star-system around like a space craft. The giant mirror (or passive solar sail) atop the star is held in place by something called radiation pressure, its incredibly light structure stops it from falling into the star. The reflective concave surface redirects light at and past the star. The redirected light that hits the star creates a reaction whereby more energy is directed back at the passive solar sail, and the light that is directed past the star generates thrust. Around the middle of the Star, the Eliptic plane, is a gargantuan network of Tandraxian Star-Engines (those little dots) harvesting the star’s energy to power their civilisation. On the opposite pole to the passive solar sail is the Caplan thruster, or stellar drive as it is also known. The concept behind this theoretical engine is that it uses magnetic particle collectors to harvest solar flares and other electromagnetic activity as fuel. This beastly thruster has two engines, one larger and one smaller roughly the size of Jupiter and Saturn. The smaller Saturn sized engine is directed at the star, stopping it from plummeting into a fiery grave, this is called the anchor. The larger Jupiter sized engine is directed away from the star and generates thrust. This Caplan thruster also puts the star through a process of accelerated stellar shedding, making the star travel faster and faster as it loses mass.

Nomads stars are host to all kinds of Conglomerate, Gord, Gherra and Kolaxan satellites seeking refuge and hitching a ride, we will visit one of them this issue.

Thanks Gabu ☺️ The ship in the foreground is a Star-Engine, those dots you see around the equator of the Nomad Star are all Star-Engines!

So grand!! Excited to see how the ship in the foreground and the nomad star are connected!

I haven’t got an exact number for you, but there is a fair few of them. The closest Tandrax dyson swarms to imperium territory have all been converted into nomad stars and mobilised. You’re right, they are by no means an in invulnerable target. The Caplan thruster is a weak point, so is the risk of kessler syndrome and that passive solar sail could be destroyed with ease. At the same time, a nomad star is a hornets nest, it is armed to the teeth with an incomprehensibly large fleet of nomad stars and von neumann probes. If the imperium were to attack, very heavy losses would be guaranteed, but victory is not off the table, it would just be a hard fought victory. To avoid discovery the Tandrax have an order of psionic monks that spend their lives constantly shielding the nomad star from perception.

Callum Diggle

How many nomad stars exist at the time of the story? While I understand they are nomadic and at little risk of being a target, could the Imperium be a legitimate threat to the Stars?
