That’s like comparing apples to oranges, their technological trees are so very different, but if I was pressed to give an answer, I’d say the Imperium. As for Chantauri referring to other Chantauri individuals in the past tense or when they are away, they simply don’t. It’s a testament to how they were never able to organise in a similar way to us as a species. Early Human scientists theorised that this state of consciousness may have arisen from their hermaphroditic nature. Chantauri very rarely live in any settlement larger than a small village or tribe. Newg is practically a metropolis by Chantauri standards. When Chantauri do live in a city or a large town they’re whipped up into a sort of community mind, reacting to the symphony of pheromones produced by the collective, they’re rather like ants in that respect. When there’s a large enough group of them, the individual sort of disappears into the mass and fulfil tasks that need to be performed. With that being said, the personality does not vanish entirely in such environments, they can still get into disputes with other Chantauri, feel happy or sad by certain outcomes and so on… They’re quite alien in that respect, but rather human in other regards. Perhaps coming into contact with other sentient species who have this concept of names and identity was a bit of a radical change for the modus operandi of the Chantauri mind. Maybe it was a similar revelatory moment as humanities theorised transfer from the Bicameral mind to the individual mind. I’m not saying that the Chantauri exist/existed in a state of Bicameralism, but that the jump between states would be of a similar magnitude, a major change to their state of consciousness. The Chantauri react to the world on a moment to moment basis with little or no capacity to delay gratification. They also notably have low impulse control when compared to humans. They’re more bound to their instincts than we are. All of these things may play a factor, but we still do not understand our own consciousness, so how could we ever hope to understand an aliens? I hope that’s an alright answer, some food for thought at least.

Since the Chantauri don't use verbal names, how would Chantauri-A refer to Chantauri-B if Chantauri-B was not currently present?
