Master of One - Prologue, 1, 2

As I'm moving through different drafts of the story, I'm experimenting with different approaches to conveying the information, thoughts, and world building that I want to get across. The first version of the story was in first person, which is great for showing how a character thinks and feels about what's going on, but makes it harder to convey information to the reader. If it's something the character already knows, they can reflect on how it relates to their current circumstances, but if it's new, there needs to be another character to come along and share it with them.

That works relatively well for Augur, because most of the world there is something I would expect a typical reader to understand - there's nothing particularly out of the ordinary about living in a cheap apartment, so it's only when that lifestyle gets upended that things get more complex.

For a LitRPG, there are some tropes in place, but with as many takes on the genre as there have been, not every assumption is a safe one. There's also some parts of the experience of living in a world that in some ways operates on video game logic (and in other ways operates entirely outside of video game logic) which I want to examine, and that requires getting into a little more detail about what's going on than "He hit level 2 and unlocked Fire Bolt".

This latest take is an attempt to balance the need to show what's going on, how characters react to things, and what's happening in the world. I'm giving some additional focus and backstory to more characters, which is intended to allow the reader to compare and contrast how they view the world, but which has the benefit of also making the place feel a little deeper and more lived in.
