Sexual racism

I've been asked multiple times now whether or not having racial preferences for dating, sex etc. is a form of discrimination. The answer is yes but having any preference is a form of discrimination and psychology (like me) would argue that some discrimination is good. Discriminating between children and adults for example. Or discriminating between sober and drunk. Discrimination is a tool our minds use to assess our conditions and make decisions. So I'm not outright opposed to discrimination. I'm opposed to maltreatment and injustice.

So when asked about discrimination, I chose to speak to a more specific issue, that of racism  -- this week's episode.

I've talked about racism on DoeEyes (my personal vlog) a few times and I like to reblog posts that challenge racists thinking but I don't think I've addressed sex and racism. Until now.

Today we're publishing a labor of love, a episode about racist sex/sexual racism/sex & race -- title in the works. The script was written primarily by me but influenced and edited by many others. I asked Sabrina Cruz, Kat Blaque, Kat Laso, and Dr. Hernando Chaves to give their perspectives, in addition to eleven other non-public voices and people of color. I thought and thought and listened and asked questions and rewrote this so it would have two effects.

One, that we'll change our behaviors which in turn will change our thoughts and two, we'll keep talking. No episode of Sexplanations is the end all be all on that subject. They're just four-to-five-minute conversation starters to inspire lifelong learning about sexuality and I want today's efforts to be no different.

I've been told that this episode will draw in parts of the internet devoted to hurting others but I'm proceeding with courage that our community will outdo their voices. We will raise our thumbs up more than they turn theirs down. We will share and share and share the content so it is heard for its intent not just targeted for being anti-racist. I trust that what we've created both in content and community is worth having conversations about even if not everyone agrees because there's too much fear-based shit out there and someone needs to do it differently.

Onward to kindness and truth.

Warmly,

Lindsey
