The Angel 2-parter was the first episode that Matt, Karen and Alex filmed for season 5 (and the first they filmed together). This was the second to last episode episode they filmed together. It was kind of fitting that they got to book end their time together with Angel episodes, bringing them full circle. Definitely a tear jerker that gets me every time, even though I know what's coming. For us watching in real time we had fore knowledge that a new companion was coming, and who that would be (no spoilers here), as this season was actually split into 2 parts. This episode aired in September, then we had the Christmas special, and the rest of the season picked up again in March. So we did know this was Amy and Rory's last episode. I genuinely love that reactors such as yourself get the surprise element of a companion leaving partway through a season, for you this is just a regular episode 5, and it really does make it all the more unexpected. Personally I wish I'd had that experience back then.

2024-11-11 06:13:06 +0000 UTCI swear, no matter how many times I have seen this episode, it can never NOT make me sob like a baby. Amy and Rory are probably my second favorite companion(s) in the series. The next one being my top favorite. I can't wait for you to meet the next companion but it is a heartbreak after Amy and Rory. Amy and Rory were an amazing duo that we never really get in the newer series (known as New Who). We had a bit of Rose and Jack traveling but Jack didn't last long as an official companion. Amy alone was great, but I think adding in that dynamic with Rory and them being married is what really made their era so wonderful and different and unique (granted classic who had multi companions a lot so its not so unique then). And let's not forget adding River into that dynamic was a really fun story.

MOFFAT WHEN WE CATCH YOU MOFFAT! 👊🏻🤬 just to add salt to the wound: Rory woke up first in the graveyard bc he made sure he landed first in a last ditch effort to break Amy’s fall, River had to keep watching the angel after basically watching her parents die just so the Doctor could mourn, and Karen Gillan was sat next to Matt Smith reading the afterword to him while he cried for the official audio used in this ep 😀
