It's so brilliantly well done with both dealing with, exposing and ultimately bringing at least some sort of catharsis to the character's hidden (or not so hidden) insecurities. All except for Cordelia, because Cordelia is always just Cordelia. The scene with Giles and Ethan was a huge shock when this first aired as well. Giles has a dark past, I am intrigued. This is also the episode where my BtVS ship sets sail, Giles/Ethan eff yeah! :D RIP to Robin Sachs, who played the role of Ethan, as well. He died suddenly in 2013. A brilliant character actor with a rich and varied career. Btw the Latin words for the spell that Ethan uses are, "Janus, evoco vestram animam. Exaudi meam causam. Carpe noctem pro consilio vestro. Veni, appare et nobis monstra quod est infinita potestas. Persona se corpum et sanguium commutandum est. Vestra sancta praesentia concrescet viscera. Janus! Sume noctem!" It roughly translates to, "Janus, hear my plea. Take this as your own. Come forth and show us your truth. The mask is made flesh. The heart is curdled by your holy presence. Janus, this night is yours."
