I've never been able to decide, is Elena taking drugs to hallucinate someone and then deciding to erase all her memories of loving him a better or worse way of dealing with grief than burning down the house and turning off her emotions? Maybe they're just both equally bad. Elena as a human experienced a lot of grief, but with the heightened emotions of a vampire, I think grief is just too much for her to handle anymore.
