He was upset with the fact that now he had to see his girlfriend in pain. It was him being mad at the universe for something he knew was going to hurt the people he cared about.

Maybe it was a mistake on her part, buy why would she possibly assume this version of Stefan, with no memories of her, would fall in love with her in a matter of hours?
