Possibly. But, I think he’s nice to the regulars because they belong to him. He plucked them from obscurity. That’s why even when they suck out loud, like that brain injury guy, he never calls them out. He also retroactively calls people bucket pulls that weren’t bucket pulls. Like that guy from Estonia. He wasn’t a bucket pull. Someone told Tony he was funny and he got put on the show. But, since then, Tony’s referred to him as a bucket pull. He’s done that to a lot of them. Because that’s a better testament to him and his show. So yeah, I agree that he’s covering some insecurity, and no act is perfect, but I’d still say he’s leaning into the negative natural response he receives from people.

Tony knows who he is and leans into it. He knows he’s not likable. If he tried to be likable it would seem fake af. I don’t think Tony’s funny, but I get the strategy. That’s why being an egotist who’s lost his mind is annoying- and thus on brand. It’s literally the opposite of the Shane Gillis or Theo Von effect, where you just automatically like them and thus they’re funnier to you. You don’t like Tony, so he doesn’t tell jokes, he makes fun of helpless open mic comics to rub you face in how little you like him.
