Obviously, coercing someone into sharing their thoughts with you is fucked up, but the thing that’s fucked up about it is the lack of consent, not the actual ability to go through someone’s thoughts. If you suspect that your partner’s cheating on you and ask them if you can look through their phone, only for them to get defensive and say, “No way, you’re totally outta line,” I feel like it makes sense for you to doubt them based on their unwillingness to be totally transparent on that point. But if we had the ability to read minds, it wouldn’t even need to get to that point they could literally just say, “I’m so certain that I’m not cheating on you that I will literally let you into my head for you to confirm it for yourself.” In that specific case, where you’re trying to quell your partner’s concerns about you cheating on them, I can’t think of any reason you wouldn’t consent to letting them read your mind apart from you wanting to keep them from discovering that you’ve thought of cheating/wanted to cheat/already cheated on them.

But I think if you’re in a position of power where people’s lives are at stake (politician, judge, cop, etc), total mental transparency would be on balance, a good thing.

2023-12-21 13:45:01 +0000 UTCI can kinda understand why people on here have a skeptical view of mind reading (violation of cognitive liberty, invasive means of government control, could be implemented in a way that’s one-sided and punitive) but I think in theory, everyone having the ability to perfectly read everyone else’s mind would solve WAY more problems than it causes. Think about all the evil and negative consequences that stem from us not being able to tell what the people around us are thinking. Government corruption, innocent people being convicted of crimes they didn’t commit, dishonest and manipulative assholes in your social circle, aspiring terrorists, etc… All of these issues would be things of the past in a world where we can read minds. But Shane raised an interesting point about invasive thoughts like wanting to fuck your buddy’s wife. I think another positive consequence of mind-reading would be a greater societal awareness of the kinds of minds that we have, and the kinds of thoughts that we’d like to punish and promote. So in Shane’s case, I don’t think he can really be faulted for wanting to fuck his friend’s wife if she’s especially hot, cuz that’s just a natural biological impulse. But there are many different shadings of that thought that I think Shane and the people around him would be better off being collectively aware of. Like what if Shane wanted to fuck his friend’s wife to torment his friend psychologically, or to have some kinda sick ego trip? Such people clearly exist today, and the non-psychopaths among us don’t know where the fuck they are. What about pedophiles and people who facilitate the production of child sex abuse material? How fuckin dope would it be for you to know with literally 100% certainty that you could trust whoever you’re hiring to take care of your kid, or write your laws, or be your friend? I think a world where that level of transparency is expected from everyone would be amazing.
