Great to see you reacting to this. "2001" was release in 1968 and "Colossus: The Forbin Project" in 1970 so there was some interest in this kind of sci-fi film that presented a more ambivalent and creative view of science. This was Cold War stuff as you can see in the cloak and dagger security while gathering the scientists, the constant threat of nuclear bomb detonation and the distressing discovery that the whole purpose of the installation is to weaponize viruses.
