UNCUT | The Shop Around The Corner (1940) Movie Reaction

Hi all! It's time for another festive fancy, it's "The Shop Around The Corner" (1940), which I absolutely adore! It's up there with "It's A Wonderful Life" for me now. Another James Stewart film that's so well crafted.

I hope you'll enjoy watching this one along with me. It's so special and there's a lot of the film that really speaks to me.

I'm hoping to get this film out as one of the main film reactions once I'm able to get back to work on the edits after these projects I've got on. Along with a few others I've started.

Take care everyone and Merry Christmas!

WPAT used to play the song "She Loves Me", and it was a favorite of mine - I'd happily sing along with it. And when my mother and I went to a revival on Broadway of the musical, which was lovely, hearing the song was thrilling to me. Lubitsch is one of the most wonderful directors of the Hollywood era, and this is one of my favorite Lubitsch movies. I highly also recommend "To Be or Not to Be" and "Trouble in Paradise". Felix Bressart, one of that treasure trove of supporting players, and who was Pirovich here, was a Lubitsch regular. Joseph Schildkraut, Vadash, was a notable stage actor. He appeared in a few movies, notably as Judas in 1927's "King of Kings"; and as the father in "The Diary of Anne Frank". He was Jewish, and as you watch "The Twilight Zone", you will eventually meet him again in "Deaths-Head Revisited". Frank Morgan, who played Mr. Matuschek, was famous for playing the Wizard in "The Wizard of Oz" in 1939, and the balloon line is a little in-joke. Jimmy Stewart has long, lovely hands and he uses them beautifully here. He and Sullavan are together again in a much different move, "The Mortal Storm". Yes, there's a definite family resemblance to "Hobson's Choice": the family that is a small business; the position and authority of the head of the tiny company; the feeling of community around the neighborhood; and the nostalgic feeling in the tone and presentation.

I’m really proud this film was selected for preservation in the US Library of Congress. Yet, I feel the film is under appreciated or unknown to the public as it is left off many top ten Christmas movie rankings while critics rate it very highly. Showing classics keeps them available to new audiences who can re-discover such quality films. Thanks Marty!

Such a wonderful film. There have been several versions of this story on film and on stage. I was in the musical She Loves Me on stage a few years ago... I played the "best friend" role of Sipos. Still one of my favorite shows.
