For Apple users: How to Avoid the new iOS 30% fee on Patreon

Apologies for the delay in letting you all know and (for now) this does not apply to existing subscriptions. I just found out about this thanks to both a good friend of mine and also Fran over at Tiff & Eve Comics page.

The fee, which only applies to Apple users using the iOS app, goes into effect in November.

Please read all the info below to avoid an extra charge.

Patreon that Apple is going to implement a new 30% fee for using the Patreon app to make payments.

*THIS ONLY APPLIES TO PATRONS WHO USE AN IPHONE OR IPAD*

Apple decided to slap a 30% fee on any and all purchases you make on Patreon via their iOs app. Patreon doesn't get any of this 30% fee, and no creators get any of this 30% fee either. Apple alone benefits from this, and Patreon is forced to charge this extra fee or they can't have their app on Apple products.

HOW TO AVOID? Pay for everything Patreon-related on a desktop/website or an android device, NOT THE iOs (Apple) APP.

WHO DOES THIS APPLY TO?

If you're already paying for your tier, and you're happy there, and your subscription rate already gets automatically debited every month, you're fine.

If you are a current patron and decide to upgrade your tier to a higher tier (or free member upgrading to paid), you should use a computer or android device to pay.

If you unsubscribe and resubscribe, you will see this fee on the app. Go to the Patreon website on a regular computer and pay there.

If you're brand new and want to sign up, go to the Patreon website on a regular computer and pay there.

Basically, if you want to avoid a 30% uncharge for using the Patreon app on an Apple device, you will need to use a computer or android device to make any payments.

CAN I STILL USE THE APP FOR OTHER STUFF?

Yes, you can use the Patreon app for liking posts, commenting, etc. Just don't pay for anything there.
