Hi all! Here's my uncut reaction to "Caché" or "Hidden" in English. This was a surprise, as I thought it was going to be filmed a lot differently to this. It was brilliantly done, wildly out of the ordinary in a lot of places with quite a lot of empty space between things. Not empty space to leave room for tension, but just parts that feel like they should have been cut.
However, the film is unsettling and creepy in places and does play with our minds, especially when you start to feel the need to search the shots.
For the film overall though, very well told story, with one scene taking me aback. it was so abrupt, but done incredibly well.
It could have been that I took this film on just as I was getting ill, but I did leave it feeling like something was amiss. I say my thoughts in the trivia section, but I have yet to edit that down. There wasn't many trivia pieces, so I do chat some more about why I think certain things.
It's not to say I disliked this, but it just didn't feel the same as I thought it would and felt that although the editing is meant to be more relaxed to allow breathing room, it feels like they may have left too much.
This is all my opinion though and everybody views things differently. I was also intrigued at the comments online rating this as a masterpiece. Whilst it's definitely one for the cinematic books, it also left a lot to be desired. Mainly in trimming the film in edit and tightening the scenes a little. I know you may think I'm impatient, but I'm far from it and love slow burning films... although as a Video Editor the editing was a little jarring at times due to some of the choices.
However, for the rest of what it does do, it does it all well and it makes the film feel like real events at times.
I have to say that part of my enjoyment of this was scuppered by subtitles that didn't match up correctly... and that was from the official source. Either way, I managed to follow it and really liked the story.
Also, I kept in these subtitles for you to check out. You'll see they start to mis-align a way through it.
What are your thoughts on this film? Did you like it? Did you feel it was too slow in places and needed tightening a little?
