SURPRISE!! Episode 16 of Map Men *2* days early!

BOO!!

(As in the surprise boo, not the noise you make in the theatre when you're unhappy.)

The surprise is, episode 16 of Map Men is here for your delectation (just looked it up and that is the right word) a full TWO days earlier than the rest of the internet.

I really hope you like this episode! It's all about Antarctica. We have VERY few viewers in that part of the world, so I do hope people watch it anyway.

As usual, it's quite possible that the final URL that gets published on Monday will be a slightly different one from this one, as Mark and I spot mistakes and improvements I forgot to improve.

By all means, if *YOU* spot anything that you think is a mistake, or a goof, like a misspelled caption, or a sound effect being way too loud, or a bit of music being way too quiet, or a bit of green screen gone wrong, or a bit of graphics outstaying its welcome for a frame or two, then please do let me know.

On the other hand, if you spot something that can't easily be fixed in the next 48 hours, such as my delivery of a line being a bit wooden, or our haircuts being unfashionable, or a fundamental misunderstanding of the topic at hand, then by all means keep that to yourself.

Also, and I really can't say this enough, I'm so so SO grateful to all of you for being my Patreon supporters! This episode had lots of outtakes, so, if you're on the fancy higher tier, don't forget to stay tuned for those coming quite soon.

I really hope you've had an absolutely wonderful week, and that your weekend's about to be just as wonderful. Lockdown's nearly over, lads!

Bye now!

Jay

And we'll totally gobble it up and willingly do exactly what Jay wants!

I was going to point out the same thing! It's definitely funnier, but there is probably going to be some pedantry in the Youtube comment section

Good episode! If any map fans are also fans of flags I recommend looking up the "True South" flag made by researchers in Antarctica, it's very good

Cliff Excellent

Oh please don't buckle to me not getting the intention! :D

I've buckled, and added an E to the end of "Republique Francaise" :P

Jay Foreman

Hi Thora, VERY well spotted! It says "is is" instead of "it is". Will change that right now! As for "Le Republique Francaise" being wrong, that was on purpose. (You may also have spotted the deliberately provocative "Le Belgium".) Thank you so so much for proof reading that and spotting the errors! :)

Jay Foreman

Ah, I love a good Berwick upon Tweed joke in the morning! I noticed two things with the Antarctic Treaty around 4:35. 1) there is a double "is" in the beginning of the second paragraph 2) the French prefer their republic to be of feminine gender, i.e. République française, with an e at the end. Because, you know, f*ck all french learners. Great episode. Not that it was necessary, but they become better and better :)

That small cat in the box joke was absolutely hilarious. You guys made my day. Thanks to the internet, I am able to enjoy a comedy show about maps, it's amazing!

Atrobbus

the quiz answer to 1 is D, right? I'm fairly certain that Michael Palin is more important than any of those other jabronis

It's quite a flex of you guys to put correction-bait in for us patrons, very well played indeed.

Thanks Azou! Yes, I did read that Norway have since clarified their claim, and I considered adding that to the script. But I thought it was simpler (and funnier) to only show Norway's initial fat-banana-shaped claim. Thanks so much for pointing it out though!

Jay Foreman

I think Norway recently revised/clarified their territorial claim in Antarctica so that it extends all the way to the South Pole.

Azou

Holy cow! I totally missed that (I've been burned by parenthis problems in programming often enough in my job that I usually spot unmatched ones right away). Nice!

I cannot believe I let the "2011" mistake slip by. That's not a joke, it's a massive howler, and I'm definitely going to fix that. Thanks so much for spotting it!

Jay Foreman

Whoops!! Totally worth fixing. Thanks!!

Jay Foreman

Brilliantly done, Jay (and Mark)! I noticed a small something. At around 1:50, during the textbook bit, the paragraph under "What did he do?" is missing a closed parenthesis or has one too many open parentheses. Or, as I believe you call them in the UK, curvyboys. In the same graphic, and this might be me sitting blithely unaware beneath the flight path of a good joke, Scott is described as arriving at the South Pole in 2011. Just for fun, here's another unimportant footnote for WWII: along with liberty steaks, we renamed sauerkraut "liberty cabbage" because "stinky German lettuce" was already taken. Anyway, excellent work as always, thank you for the sterling education and comedy!

nitetime

This is great! Since you're asking, the only mistake I can find is tiny: the textbook page on Scott at 1:51 has nested parentheses in the first sentence of "What did he do?” but only one closing bracket. Told you it was tiny...

Amazing as always!

The treaty having all of the countries signed in their own languages is well done. Mark washing the various things in the sink is brilliant. I thought the milk jug was good, but I laughed out loud at the saw. ....and again at 8:29. :-D

Craig P Steffen

That is an amazing fact, and I wished we'd known about it when we wrote the script. Thanks! :)

1:23: The mustache build-up is hilarious! Now want to find all of the originals of those images and compare them. Even funnier against the backdrop of the eyebrows in the Pangea video. Love the "like trivial pursuit wedges" line. Nice "Penguin Publishing" logo at 3:42. 5:01: Nice! Ha! The USSR dissolving into the Russian Federation flag is a very nice touch.
