January Update!

Hi everyone! I'm about to go see Liquorice Pizza today because I'm considering making a video about it this month (the discourse has been interesting!). I think it might be a good jumping off point to discuss the medium of film and subjectivity - especially as it pertains to the final section of Walter Benjamin's essay, "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" (he is very wary of film aesthetics and its power to manipulate the viewer). I'll link the essay here for you to read - the section I'm speaking about comes in the very last pages, but the entire essay is an amazing read.

I've also watched the first four episodes of And Just Like That, and while I have some choice words to say about the way the show uses BIPOC characters, I actually don't find it as horrible as people have been saying - there are some really touching moments. Hannah and I are going to do a recap pod for the Richard Vixons and Margot Throbbies sometime in the upcoming week.

Lastly, I'm currently working on an essay about what I like to call "Retributive Accountability" - but since I'm really new to the personal essay format (and since its on a subject no one can seem to talk about without sounding like a right-winger) it's taking me longer than expected! But it'll be out soon enough for the latter tiers!

Hope you're all enjoying these final days of December! Wishing everyone a happy and safe new year - and thank you so much for making my year extremely special <3

I'm curious if this has anything to do with Lindsay Ellis leaving social media :(

I'm sure you've already seen this but re: retributive accountability I thought ContraPoints' cancel culture video essay was really nuanced!
