Preparing for my Defence + Interesting Article!

Hi everyone - and welcome new patrons :^)! As of right now I'm preparing for my defence at the end of the month, which I am absolutely terrified about lol. Essentially, it's a 2 hour session where a panel of experts grill you about your work and you have to "defend" it! I've historically been very scared of oral presentations and this one feels like the final boss, so I'm trying my best to be as on top of it as possible.

Once September hits and I'm (hopefully) free of school, I'm going to start working on the next video - which is about Love Island and surveillance culture! I'm super excited about it! It's sponsored by MUBI (who I love), and Hannah is going to be building the confessional set and everything.

Lastly, I wanted to share this interesting N+1 article with you guys. I'm getting back into reading and, having read a lot notable Goodreads reviews and watched a lot of booktubers, I've been a bit confused about the status of contemporary literary criticism. This article provides an interesting take on the profession: https://www.nplusonemag.com/issue-40/the-intellectual-situation/critical-attrition/

Would love to hear your thoughts!

Good luck with your defence! Also, if anyone wants to recommend me good booktuber channels, please do! I watch quite a lot of booktube, but most of the people I watch do quite shallow and simple critiques. I enjoy those videos and find them good to find out about new books, but I also miss more in-depth book reviews. (Also I tried to to leave a comment here yesterday but Patreon appears to have eaten my comment. if posting this somehow makes my other comment also appear, apologies for double posting!)

Loved this piece, thanks for sharing - the more that a book cover is plastered with glib praise by eminent or 'hot' authors, the less likely I am to pick it up (I severely doubt most of them read the whole book) and I used to enjoy reading book reviews but rarely come across them nowadays outside of the 'reputable' broadsheets - I haven't yet noticed this profusion of CTRs though they sound like a natural product of our content-hungry, Twitter-enslaved, oft-superficial age... Critic, review thyself (o;
