My problem with Elon Musk started simply with the hyperloop. I knew that was BS from the second I heard it. Hes then repeated this with the supersonic vertical take off and landing electric jet, and ‘full self driving’ cars…. Oh and solar roofs and his 150mph loop system!
As a result when he claims hes going to make $50 bn a year from providing satellite internet to sparsely populated parts of the planet, Im maybe a little more than skeptical! The simplest numbers are according to Musk himself, the satellites have a bandwidth of some 20Gbs each. Given the satellite serve only a relatively small area where everyone in that area is likely to be awake and using the internet at the same time, this means you are only likely to be able to serve about 1000 ppl per satellite before you start running out of bandwidth. Crunch the numbers, factoring in the fact that these satellites generally only service customers on land (30% of the Earth surface), and you have something that looks more ‘break even at best’ rather than $50 bn profit a year!
