The bit they don’t mention of course is turning carbon dioxide into diamond hasn’t been challenging for the last 20 years, it just takes an OBSCENE amount of energy. You have to keep your chemical vapor deposition diamonds at about 1000C for about a week to make a small diamond. To get a reasonable sized diamond you have to keep it at that temperature for over a month. In the end it will ‘capture’ a tiny amount of carbon dioxide. Sadly this is pure operationally insignificant eco-gimmickry!

Or the fact that artificial diamonds aren't worth anything. Carbon should be priced at it's replacement cost, so oil and diamonds should be valuable, and wood and protein should be cheap. I don't even like most humans, but here we are.

I must admit, I thought that diamond was a non-oxidisable form of carbon. If graphite is equally stable chemically that would be better from the sequestering perspective. Previous tech I’ve seen to make money from sequestered carbon has been to synthesise fuels from it or sell it in liquid form to drinks manufacturers, either of which return it to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide after its second use. It seems that there’s no saleable value in permanent carbon sequestration without it offsetting carbon taxes which we don’t have yet anyway for instance. I’m convinced we need to do it, but the question remains how do we pay for it? It was the calculations of saved CO2 from the diamond mining industry that made this “sky mining” attractive and, sadly, not the volume of carbon sequestered.

Actually, Dale isn’t trying to sell this as a solution to CO2 sequestration in itself. Yes it does use lots of energy. His solution is intended to replace the currently massively CO2 intense Diamond mining industry with carbon negative process to produce the same number of diamonds by “Mining the sky” as he likes to call it. He admits, when interviewed, that the amount of carbon tied up in each carat of diamond is not very much but as long as the energy used is produced renewably it can replace the massive CO2 emitters currently producing the worlds supply of diamonds. He is right about that carbon being permanently removed from the biosphere, it is just a bit of a disappointment to find out how little CO2 is needed. I wish him well with it. It is a worthwhile endeavour, even if it will be misrepresented by the sensationalist media.
