Greetings adventurers!

Dusty old tomes are something I’m completely used to in my field. Looking over long lost literature and the smell of musty paper are actually a comfort to me. It soothes my mind to know that knowledge can persist so long after the collector of that knowledge has passed. It gives me hope that my life’s work will endure long after my time on this mortal plane has ended. Listen to me getting all existential. I apologize. I know you’re just here to browse some interesting items. Well let me assure you that this dusty old tome is dusty for a reason.

Our patrons get early access to all of these items as well as additional formats that are easily usable in both physical and online play for D&D and Pathfinder 2E. Additionally they get high-res art exports, easy to use text exports, behind the scenes updates, and a lot more.

Design notes from Matthew:

This was an item purely born out of the concept of the creature for the month. Sometimes it goes the other way around and the item that we want to make informs the creature. This time though, it was obvious when we were creating the creature that it needed to have a fitting tome to come with it. I’m always a fan of spellbooks that can do just a bit more on top of what they already offer in the form of spells. Often times they will be a little bit of extra utility or offense, but I rarely see one made with defense in mind. That’s what I wanted to tackle with this one.

On the 5E side, I wanted to provide a basic bed of spells that would be generally useful regardless of the kind of adventure you’re on. Unseen servant, message, so on will all be useful at some point in your adventures in my opinion. They are those base utility spells that people sometimes ignore in favor of taking way too many damaging spells. In the kind of campaigns I run, there’s usually more call for utility than there is for straight damage during each combat. Let the wizard be the bag of tricks in my opinion.

For the PF2E version, I really love the way they handle concealment and obfuscation, so I wanted to be sure to include that as part of the dust mechanic. It’s a nice little escape for a spellcaster that suddenly has a whole lot of melee damage in their face after stepping forward a bit too far. It could also be beneficial for creating a hasty retreat if needed for the whole party. A spell book with defensive utility, now that’s a fun concept to me.

This is our last release of the month of March for magic items. Later on today we’ll be releasing the Tome Spirit that goes along with this item. Hopefully you all enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it. It’s so lovely to get to continue making content for your games and I just want to thank you all again for the support.

We highly encourage you to join our Discord server where you’ll get access to exclusive channels that have sneak peeks, behind the scenes chatter, and more.
