Greetings adventurers!

You find many things tumbling around in old and abandoned locations like the cathedral where we found this. We’re used to rats, bats, and wild stray cats, but what we’re not used to is coming across magicked stained glass. We came across a piece that seemed to glow with a light of its own and quickly spirited it away from that old cathedral. From our research we learned that this may have been part of a type of ancient guardian called a Stained Luminary. Considering the shape it was in, and its proclivity to deflect damage, we strapped some leather to it and a new shield was born! We hope it keeps you safe and helps to light the way.

Okay, I love the stained glass aesthetic of this piece along with the creature we created to go with it. Fernando absolutely knocked it out of the park on that and I wanted to give him kudos before I got in. This kind of ask isn’t always easy, so I like to make sure folks take that in.

For the actual design process of this, I actually created the creature that goes with it first. Though the release order is reversed, I wanted to give it something unique and then bring a piece of that unique property over to the item that went with it. I guess it is some of my Monster Hunter sensibilities kicking in. I just really love items that you earn by felling a creature that had an interesting property.

The aspect of it that lets it be like an at will lantern was a bit of a late add for me. I wanted to give it something interesting that wasn’t purely just combat oriented. I try to make sure that all of our items at least connect with 2 pillars of D&D and in this case it was combat and exploration. Giving it just a small ability like freeing up a hand to not have to carry a torch or lantern, was enough to give it a unique feel. It makes it something that you want to have on you no matter the situation and I love that.

This is our 3rd spooky item of the month and will tie in with the creature releasing this weekend as our “One More Thing” for the month. We can’t wait to share the Stained Luminary with you and let you enjoy the craziness that these stained glass construct defenders can bring. We hope you enjoy it too.
