DOGLEG GAME

I've been working on a thing. It will be a narratively driven 2D platforming bullet hell shmup kind of thing, complete with the same kind of stupid dialogue and antics that you're familiar with from my webcomics. It was originally meant to be called Paradigm but there's already a game called Paradigm so I have to think of a new name lol.

Anyway, I've been mainly working on the player character, the gun, and the player's movement physics. Turns out it's actually kinda difficult when you want the player to have momentum and inertia and all that shit. Anyway I'm staying on top of it, and I plan on posting exclusive updates here on my Patreon about the project as I develop it, maybe even some early builds so you can fuck around with it.

Here are some videos I've taken of what I've done so far:
"Paradigm dev vid 1" (the video linked above):
https://youtu.be/cdB6xftOzCE
"Kill Yourself Button" (Showcase of the dedicated suicide button, incase the player gets stuck):
https://youtu.be/qvBK28poby8
"AFK" (a 'secret' that happens if the player is AFK for five minutes):
https://youtu.be/nUPJS_slHAA

as a bonus, not that it's very interesting, here's a video from day 1 of development, just after I began developing the recoil mechanic:

P.S. This doesn't mean that my Patreon or Twitter is changing, I'm still drawing comics and I'll still post art, I'm just also making a game. I guess I've got my work cut out for me...

Oh, that's interesting. i think animation/some kind of graphical indication could make it non-icy, from the mc getting a skateboard or even just glowing and very cool-y sliding on his sheer momentum. Systemswise, having this defined as maybe a state with different collision/movement rules when you get to a minimum v_x *should* feel right, as long as the transition between modes isn't too abrupt and has some graphical feedback along with it. Since it already looks good (and feels good to look at!), I'm sure you'll be able to do a great job, so keep at it!

That's a good idea, the movement and momentum stuff is definitely not finished, I'm going to continue working on it to make it more fun and fluid. I'd like the player to be able to slide along the ground if travelling fast enough but I'd also like to make sure that it doesn't feel like you're walking on ice or something.

it reminds me of those old flash games i used to play when i was a kid. definitely interested so far

Looks very interesting, love the gun sounds and the movement seems to possibly lead to very interesting mechanics and scenarios. On that note, have you thought of giving some sort of way to make colliding with the ground/walls elastic? E.g. if you're holding space, only your y velocity changes when you hit the ground and you can maintain all your x (and part of your y) momentum to continue schmoving. This would allow for some pretty fun movement-based challenges and mechanics, I think. Either way, great job and keep going!
