Thir13en Ghosts Movie Description:

A state-of-the-art remake of the classic William Castle horror film about a family that inherits a spectacular old house from an eccentric uncle. There's just one problem: the house seems to have a dangerous agenda all its own. Trapped in their new home by strangely shifting walls, the family encounters powerful and vengeful entities that threaten to annihilate anyone in their path.

Thirteen Ghosts (also known as 13 Ghosts and stylized as THIR13EN Ghosts) is a 2001 supernatural horror film directed by Steve Beck. A remake of the 1960 film 13 Ghosts by William Castle, the film stars Tony Shalhoub, Embeth Davidtz, Matthew Lillard, Shannon Elizabeth, Alec Roberts, Rah Digga, and F. Murray Abraham. It was released to theaters on October 26, 2001.

The film was unsuccessful both critically and commercially, grossing only $68 million against its $42 million budget.

So you see, the movie may lack in some areas and may be just "entertaining" at best. But the back story behind each ghost.... EVERY single one of them has one....is where the meat on the bones are. Its REALLY fucking cool and I wish as much work went into the movie as the actual ghost characters story arcs.

The Juggernaut aka Horace "The Breaker" Mahoney. Horace was abandoned by his mother, almost immediately after birth, and was raised by his father. As a child, Horace grew to such a grotesque height and appearance that he was constantly ostracized and spent his childhood as an outcast. Mr. Mahoney put Horace to work at his junkyard, chopping and crushing up old cars. When Mr. Mahoney died, Horace was left alone and finally, with no one to guide him, went insane as a result. He became a serial killer, picking up hitchhikers and stranded motorists to take back to his junkyard; there, he would rip them apart with his bare hands and feed their remains to his dogs. This preferred method of murder was what earned him the nickname, "The Breaker" That explains the begining of the movie. That's what they were doing at that junkyard...they were capturing The Juggernauts spirit as his ghost was bound to that Junkyard and he haunted it.

The Hammer was a man named George Markley a hard working black smith. A racist man named Nathan wrongfully accused George of theft, and threatened to banish him from the town they lived in. Knowing he was innocent, George stood up to Nathan and refused to move, causing Nathan and his gang to one day beat George's wife and children to death to send him the cruel message to move or else he would suffer the same fate as his family. Enraged, George tracked down Nathan and his friends, and brutally beat them to death with his sledgehammer. When the town discovered what George had done, they dragged him back to his shop where they tied him to a tree and drove railroad spikes into his body with his own sledgehammer, slowly killing him. He's another favorite of mine.

As cheesy and "2000's" as it may be the lore behind each and every one of these ghosts are fascinating. Each one has a back story and if you look up each one it tells you who they were in life and how they died. For instance "The Jackal" wasn't a girl at all he was a man. A mental asylum patient named Ryan Kuhn. He's my favorite and I love his story. The Jackal could literally have his own movie based on his back story.
