"Oh, Death… Become my blade, once more."
Or, print fail, print this piece, once more.
The release of this Maliketh is nothing short of a miracle!
When I finished sculpting him, I was completely drained. I've said this many times before “this is the hardest piece I’ve ever sculpted” and it feels like I’m constantly trying to outdo that statement.
But truly, I made design choices that would highlight Maliketh’s presence to the fullest, and that came at a cost, both during sculpting, and later during the plate support work for my wife.
I have many years of experience as a digital sculptor, but zero experience with resin printing. I only had an FDM printer. My wife and I decided to get a resin printer to speed things up (at least that was the idea), because our partner who handled supports and printing lived in another state and had his own work to juggle.
It was a learning curve to figure out how to place the supports, it became my wife’s task. In the case of this piece, we tried to leave as few marks as possible, especially because his hair really demanded that.
We faced every beginner issue you can imagine: wrong resin calibration, pieces that didn’t stick to the build plate, temperature drops mid-print, and that led to printing the same part over and over.
When we were finally nearing the end, with just three terrain pieces left for the base, some supernatural force acted: the build plate detached and dropped all the base plates into the vat, tearing a hole in the nFEP.
But eventually, every piece was printed. And looking at this model now… damn, with Marika’s blessing, we can say this is the best Maliketh available for 3D printing!
Did it cost us a piece of our soul?
Yes.
But now it’s safely sealed inside a 34 cm tall figure.
Can’t wait to see who among you will be the first to complete it.
GIFT
Well, I wouldn’t have been able to bring anything else this month, all our efforts went into Maliketh.
However, we had a project already in progress with a fellow sculptor, Rodrigo Bernardes, so you get to enjoy Recluse in 75 mm and 32 mm scales.
⠀
Lucky you.
Let’s print, paint!
