DC20 Magazine #6 - Beta Bestiary Vol. 1

This month’s issue of the DC20 Magazine is a collection of brand new monsters! They’re designed for early level play, up to level 4 Monsters, including a couple of Apex Monsters that are meant to be solo bosses.

Included within are some completely new monsters, along with our takes on a few classics. The most exciting you’ll find here are the Arctic Chimera, which has modular options to build a more unique combination of beasts, and the Necromancer, the classic fantasy villain that raises Undead Thralls to fight by their side. I’m confident all of these monsters will be super exciting for GMs to run and for Players to battle!

Thank you so much. I had this doubt for a while. This bestiary is looking fun and exiting.

Hey Coach! Me and the team at Shield's Rest love what you're doing with this system. This bestiary is sick! Love the arctic chimera cover! So excited to see what you continue to bring to this system!

Shield's Rest

In general, yes. equal number of player and PC levels is a generally tough combat. It's a good "tough, but not deadly" challenge for all but the most optimized/experienced tables.

I am so excited ill be DMing a party of 4 when .9 drops and this has helped so much with my creativity and adding even more spice to combat!

I don't jet understand how to use the monster level when making encounters. Is a level 4 monster equivalent to four level one player characters for a balanced encounter?

Mariano Ferreyra

Thank you, I did a lot of the work in designing the Lightning Bug specifically. First time seeing my name in the DC20 credits. So happy you enjoyed some of it!

Claudio_Wild

Yes they get 2 turns in the initiative order :) just make sure they dont go FIRST and LAST (then they would go back to back)

Alan Bjorkgren

Awesome! Apex monsters specify "2 turns", does that mean they go twice per round?

Marcus

Lightning "bugs". Very cool to have a colloquial term that residents might use and heros are unaware of the potential danger.

PhoenixM13

lore for artic chimeras inspired by mistborn(very minor spoilers): there are undead creatures that scavenge corpses and use their bones to make “replica” bodies of that creature, the chimeras could all actually be the result of undead scavengers that use their dead bodies to form something new, taking its favorite of each of their qualities and making monstrosities of all varieties. They live only in cold wheather were the temperature better preserves carrion.
