Adventures in Oil Washing

This time around I'm taking a look at oil washes. Going from soft to overdone on a safe canvas. I can see a lot of potential for this technique if I were to go back and add highlights, weathering powder, the sky is the limit. But in this video I wanted to see the oil by itself to get a good grip on it's potential. Enjoy!

Nice! Oils are finally making it into war gaming at large and they really offer a lot. It gives a specific look but not a bad one at all. Then you can sharpen things up with some acrylic blending and edging. Once I get to my cursed city stuff at large I'll be employing the oils again :) The future looks bright!

I made a lot of gundam models before getting into mini painting, and oil washes were a pretty common weathering tool. I hadn't brought them into my minis much until recently. I painted the shoulder horns on a bust with yellows and greens, then went in with a fairly thing crimson in an oil pain ontop, wiping most of it off with white spirits so it stayed in the cracks. I really liked the effect it gave. I think an acrylic wash would have brought way too much red to the game, but the oils really gave me full control of where it went in the end.

Glad to hear that, Rob! I hear you there, the future looks bright, and oily 😎

Love that you are getting into oils. For me their strongest attribute is the ease of error correction with them.
