Bi-Monthly Patron Double Feature Nominations - Feb. 2024

I'm sure most of you know the drill at this point but one episode every other month around these parts is a special episode where you folks nominate and vote for that week's double feature! Democracy!

Your last vote was for TOUCH OF EVIL (1958) + L.A. CONFIDENTIAL 1997) which we just dropped. The next episode you're voting on will be for one of our episodes in February!

This is our 19th time doing this so I'm sure, once again, that most of you know the drill by now but in case you don't:

1) Comment below with your double feature ideas/requests of pre-2000s genre films (maybe include an argument for the pairing to convince others for part 2.)

2) Look at other people's double features below and hit the "like" button on it to upvote theirs if you think it's a good one.

This post will be up for about a week or so and after the results are in I will put the most upvoted double features into a poll for everyone to vote on more officially.

AND GO!

Manchurian Candidate and Judgement at Nuremberg. The ending of Jidgement leads us directly to the Cold War paranoia of Manchurian. Plus the casting for both is amazing!

Since Van Damuary was a hit why not Chanuary. A whole month dedicated to the greatest martial arts film star of all time, Jackie Chan. Snake in the Eagle's Shadow (1978) & Snake & Crane Arts of Shaolin (1978): Some early Chan. Project A (1983) & Project A Part II (1987): The Movie that established the Chan we all now love today and it's sequel. Coconut Crab

THE WARRIORS(1979) and THE WANDERERS(1979) Two "gang-sploitation" movies released within the same year, set in the same city, both with with colorful gang members, but varying heavily in that one is a chase/action movie, while the other is a coming of a age drama(with a fair bit of a action as well)

Max Jackson

Les Vampires (1915) and Irma Vep (1996) for obvious reasons (Irma Vep is a movie about remaking Les Vampires), the first would also be the oldest film on the podcast i think

zagzome

The Trial (1962) and Brazil (1985). Two darkly comic films of what happens when bureaucratic authoritarianism is both evil and incompetent.

Jealous Cactus

Neighbors (1981) and Parents (1989). Hammy and horrifying 80s black comedies about suburbia and what it’s like to manage the proximity and distance that come with our peculiar North American living arrangement. Both are strange beyond imagining. And Parents is Bob Balaban’s only film as a director! And who doesn’t love Bob Balaban (all the Christopher Guest mockumentaries, Seinfeld, Midnight Cowboy, Gosford Park, Altered States, Ghost World, Clockwatchers, etc.)?

Chase Padusniak

EATING RAOUL (1982) + THE COOK, THE THIEF, HIS WIFE, AND HER LOVER (1989): food-related crime films with cannibalism as a footnote

Jackson Littlewood

This needs to finally be done

Caleb

Bringing up Baby (1938) + What’s Up, Doc? (1972). A screwball comedy classic and Bogdanovich’s loving homage to the genre, both featuring geeky hot men in glasses, daffy dames, ripped suits and other ensuing hijinks.

Matt Nisi

"Roar (1981) and The Ghost and the Darkness (1996) - Two examples of movies involving lions from Hollywood. One is a traditional horror movie starring Michael Douglas and Val Kilmer trampling over what was reportedly Hollywood screenwriter GOD William Goldman's favorite screenplay and completely changing what he had written. The other is a traditional adventure comedy starring Tippi Hedren, her real life children including Melanie Griffith, being trampled over the lions, tigers, even elephants that they made a film about, all due to the insanity of director/producer/actor Noel Marshall, Hedren's real life husband. Both movie's productions were the results of working in real nature with real animals, and with all the behind the scenes nightmares there could be so much to talk about for this episode. Also, bonus for this for consideration, according to Letterboxd, Josh hasn't seen either yet, and Jamie hasn't seen Ghost and the Darkness. So it's a win-win for everybody!"

Harrison Rees

Croupier (1998) and Hard Eight (1996) Late 90's losers put it all on red to escape the banality of their hallow decade.

Yes, Madam! (1985) and Police Story 3 (1992) Reasons (if not already obvious): 1. To honour the God Yeoh on the anniversary of her big Oscar win. 2. To correct your egregious lack of Cynthia Rothrock coverage. 3. To complete your coverage of the Police Story trilogy. 4. Springboard into a month-long celebration of the girls with guns subgenre. 4(b). This could become an annual feature ("Girls with Gunuary"? "Cynthia Rothrocktober"?)
