The Dark Knight (2008) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

!!!!! Heath Ledger was AMAZING!!!

More amazing characters in this one, and of course cheesy puns 🤣

That was such a joy to watch, I do find myself cheering for the baddies, but overall I'm really liking Bruce/Batman. And of course his sidekicks, Alfred and Lucius 🤩

The joker was so unhinged, it was exhilarating! I wish we could have had more of him.

I also love Gordon and Batman's relationship. They are such a good team and are completely on the same side.

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  You can set picture in picture by right clicking twice on the video and selecting "Picture in picture". The right clicking twice is a bit tricky, because you have to right click, then move your cursor so it's not on the menu, then right click again

Thank you so much for being here and watching along with me!!

I look forward to seeing for myself how the different iterations of the characters are depicted. It's interesting that Adam West's version is your favourite, that's definitely not the top 3 that I hear most often. This just shows how great it is to have different iterations, each one will have people who prefer it. All the characters in The Dark Knight are amazing and oh so different, I'm really impressed seeing them all interacting and how they change throughout the film!

He's so unhinged and he's not stupid. He plays games, and I love how he's basically doing social experiments with people. It's so unpredictable and would be terrifying to go against. Like you said, seeing Bruce dealing with the madness that is the Joker was quite an interesting story

Dark Knight is probably the best movie of the trilogy. This movie was inspired by the Batman: The Long Halloween storyline and the Killing Joke graphic novel. If I had to choose my favorite live action Batman is probably Adam West’s Batman, it is probably the most interesting version of the character for me. Skyhook ( the code name for the Fulton surface to air recovery system) is a real thing that was used by the U.S. military and intelligence agency to get agents out of hot spots. The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act( RICO) is an extremely important and effective tool that the U.S. used to combat the Mafia. In the comics Jim Gordon’s wife is also named Barbara, which is also the name of his daughter which makes it very confusing. The Major Crimes Unit(MCU)is a squad within the Gotham Police Department that is headed by Gordon. Rachel’s death was extremely unexpected and shockingly tragic because it was a major blow to Bruce. I should tell you that it is similar to the death of the second Robin, Jason Todd. In the infamous “Death in the Family” story, the Joker nearly beats Jason to death with a crowbar then blew him up. Unfortunately, Jason was extremely unpopular with the readers and DC decided to let the audience vote to decide on if Jason should live or die by calling one of two 900 numbers. The result was 5,343 for death and 5,271 for survival, so he died, however there is more to the story if you are interested. I am mostly going to focus on the new characters. The Joker is one of the most infamous and iconic characters of the Batman franchise. Heath Ledgers performance is amazing because he captures the essence of Joker, he is an agent of chaos and he relishes in it. In most versions, his backstory is left ambiguous, he says it best himself “ If I’m going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice”( Killing Joke). In “The Killing Joke” graphic novel we got a backstory that has became standard. He was a failed comedian who turned to a life of crime due to having to support a pregnant wife, who died. During a job in the Ace Chemical Plant, he was force to be the Red Hood( a persona that used to hided the real head of the gang) and he is confronted by Batman which terrified him so much that he fell in a vat of chemicals which caused him to transform into the Joker we know. He contends that all you need is “one bad day” to make you lose all grip on reality. He has caused so much pain for Batman, Gordon and Gotham; He killed Jason Todd, he shot and crippled Barbara Gordon then stripped her naked and took pictures of her, then he psychologically tortured Jim Gordon with pictures of his daughter, he murdered Gordon’s wife ( in Batman: No Man’s Land storyline), and abused Harley Quinn who loved him , among other things. He is always put in Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane, a psychiatric hospital where most of Batman rogue gallery are put after Batman captured them. One thing that is missing from this movie is his trademark Joker Gas, which causes uncontrollable laughter then death with a wide smile on the corpse. Harvey Dent is one of the more tragic characters in the Batman franchise. His transformation is different than what is in the movie. He is always a good man who is trying to make Gotham a better place legally, however he was subject to abuse by his father in his childhood that causing him to develop dissociative identity disorder. During a trial of mobster Carmine Falcone, one of his lieutenants Sal Maroni throws acid on him in open court causing his trademark scars, his second personality to come out and his obsession with duality. He is constantly at war with himself and his MO is that his crimes always center around the number two. He now makes every decision with a coin flip, the coin is a double headed coin: one side is clean( usually a good result), the other side is scarred( usually means death). An interesting portrayal of him in 1989’s “Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth”( which influenced the Batman Arkham Asylum video game), the doctors their decided as a therapy to replace his coin(which has two choices) with a die( which has six) then a tarot card deck( which greatly increased the number of choices), however instead of curing him of his dependence instead leaving him unable to make the simplest decisions like going to the bathroom. In the end of the story, Batman returns the coin and lets him decide if Batman should live or die, he decides to ignore the coin’s outcome. He became a major crime boss in Gotham and is rivals with the Oswald Cobblepot( aka the Penguin). His wife Gilda usually survives and wants him back and hopes that he can be cured and the good man she loved will come back. He often has a friendly relationship with Bruce Wayne. Bruce supports Harvey before his transformation and works to find a cure for his friend. Batman treats Harvey a little differently because he is not a brutal with his takedowns.

Ledger makes this film the masterpiece that it is. The psychological aspect of having to fight a villain who has no motive, no real aims, and absolutely no emotional attachment to anyone or anything is insanely difficult. You have no angle of attack or strategy to employ. They have no emotional heartstrings to tug on, but you do and they know this. It reminds me of ISIS - their beliefs were essentially that if they established and led a caliphate they win, if they die in battle they get 72 virgins and win. If they kill innocent people they go straight to paradise so dead children is a win. If we do nothing it means God is on their side and they win. I believe Nolan took inspiration from these groups in formulating this story. There’s just no easy way to deal with people like that and this film really made you feel the turmoil Bruce had to endure trying to maintain his ideals in the face of a complete psychopath.
