1940s movie suggestions!
Added 2025-05-20 21:27:54 +0000 UTCEvery week, there will be a post asking for movie suggestions from a different decade!
Only 1 movie suggestion per person, if you suggest two, both will be disqualified. Similarly to previous posts, please ❤ every comment that contains a movie that you want to vote for.
For these posts, the top 4 movies will be put on a poll on YouTube (YT only allows a maximum of 4 options). I will determine the top 4 comments the following Tuesday when the next post is up.
I ask that you please limit the runtime of the movies to 3h (I've seen that there are some movies that are longer, and I am not up for that monumental task quite yet).
For this post, please suggest movies that were released between 1940-1949 inclusively. Any genre goes!
Next Tuesday, there will be a post for 1950s, the Tuesday after that for 1960s, etc. The poll for the decade will be up on YouTube the following Tuesday evening or Wednesday at the latest.
I feel like there's a better way to do this kind of suggestion/voting, but I'm not too sure what that is. I'm open for suggestions!

You didn't miss it I didn't do one yet, I didn't think there would be enough movies to be recommended 😅 I need to think of a different way to do these first though

2025-05-21 22:24:31 +0000 UTCMost movies made in the 1960s or earlier are not on streaming services in Canada. I usually have to rent them, search amazon for a copy, or look at my library.

2025-05-21 16:20:11 +0000 UTCYeah, this is why I need to find a different way of doing this. I was worried about that, but the last time I did a post like this, there were no repeated movies, so I thought it would be fine haha. I'm always proven wrong 🤣

2025-05-21 16:18:59 +0000 UTCOn the Town (1949) Three sailors wreaking havoc as they search for love during a whirlwind, 24 hour leave, in New York City! - starring Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Betty Garrett

2025-05-21 12:06:25 +0000 UTCsince my suggestion has very little chance of winning 🙂 and that's okay with me... but then I can make the point that gamers can easily see the exploits (some gamer types). For example if the same movie has 4 repeated entries with 4 votes each one... You cannot tell if a total of 4 people like the movie or 7 people or 16 people or 20 people. These are the min to max number of possible votes for the same movie. Why gamers? If a gamer picks up loot, let's say a new sword with different stats, the good gamer tries to figure out how the stats combine to decide the best one. Also if farming gems that you get as reward from quests, it stands to reason that more quests equal more gems or votes.

2025-05-21 00:49:42 +0000 UTCThe Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947) This is hard. There are so many great choices, it's hard to narrow it down to one. Normally, I'd go with either Rebecca (1940) (Alfred Hitchcock's only movie to win the Academy Award for Best Picture) or Spellbound (1945) (Alfred Hitchcock + Salvidor Dali = one wild movie) but I can't choose either of those movies because both of them are hard to find on streaming services.

2025-05-21 00:39:57 +0000 UTCWhich version? The Big Sleep (1946) is a great choice, but it comes in two (very) different cuts, commonly referred to as the Pre-Release and Theatrical cuts. To make the Theatrical release, they cut 20 minutes from the Pre-Release and added 22 minutes of new footage. So, while they have similar run-times (114 minutes vs. 116 minutes), they're quite a bit different....

2025-05-20 22:05:02 +0000 UTCSince you've already done "Casablanca" (1942), I'll second Scott Melton's suggestion, "The Big Sleep" (1946). But if I get another choice because I agreed with Scott, there's "Key Largo" (1948). Again with Bogey and Bacall. But also with Edward G. Robinson, Lionel Barrymore, and Claire Trevor (who won an Oscar for her role).

2025-05-20 22:00:32 +0000 UTCThis is tough because I have a massive blind spot when it comes to older movies, so this is more of a “which classic 40s movie do I want an excuse to finally watch” poll… So with that said I’m gonna go with David Lean’s ‘Brief Encounter’ (1945) … because it was apparently a major inspiration for Todd Haynes when he made one of my favourite films, 2015’s Carol.
