1940s movie suggestions!

Every week, there will be a post asking for movie suggestions from a different decade!

Only 1 movie suggestion per person, if you suggest two, both will be disqualified. Similarly to previous posts, please ❤ every comment that contains a movie that you want to vote for.

For these posts, the top 4 movies will be put on a poll on YouTube (YT only allows a maximum of 4 options). I will determine the top 4 comments the following Tuesday when the next post is up.

I ask that you please limit the runtime of the movies to 3h (I've seen that there are some movies that are longer, and I am not up for that monumental task quite yet).

For this post, please suggest movies that were released between 1940-1949 inclusively. Any genre goes!

Next Tuesday, there will be a post for 1950s, the Tuesday after that for 1960s, etc. The poll for the decade will be up on YouTube the following Tuesday evening or Wednesday at the latest.

I feel like there's a better way to do this kind of suggestion/voting, but I'm not too sure what that is. I'm open for suggestions!

You didn't miss it I didn't do one yet, I didn't think there would be enough movies to be recommended 😅 I need to think of a different way to do these first though

Verowak

Did I miss a poll for the 1930's or did you not do one?

JAKH

Gaslight (1944)

Joe M

"Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" (1944) *True Story* based on a book of the same name written by one of the survivors of the 1942 Doolittle Raid. Surviving Doolittle Raiders served as technical advisors for the movie.

Most movies made in the 1960s or earlier are not on streaming services in Canada. I usually have to rent them, search amazon for a copy, or look at my library.

Verowak

Yeah, this is why I need to find a different way of doing this. I was worried about that, but the last time I did a post like this, there were no repeated movies, so I thought it would be fine haha. I'm always proven wrong 🤣

On the Town (1949) Three sailors wreaking havoc as they search for love during a whirlwind, 24 hour leave, in New York City! - starring Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Betty Garrett

since my suggestion has very little chance of winning 🙂 and that's okay with me... but then I can make the point that gamers can easily see the exploits (some gamer types). For example if the same movie has 4 repeated entries with 4 votes each one... You cannot tell if a total of 4 people like the movie or 7 people or 16 people or 20 people. These are the min to max number of possible votes for the same movie. Why gamers? If a gamer picks up loot, let's say a new sword with different stats, the good gamer tries to figure out how the stats combine to decide the best one. Also if farming gems that you get as reward from quests, it stands to reason that more quests equal more gems or votes.

Anchors Aweigh (1945) A pair of sailors, on leave, try to help a movie extra become a singing star! - starring Frank Sinatra, Kathryn Grayson, and Gene Kelly.

Even the cat's in on it!

I was told that this is a good movie. I said "Listen, the last man that said that to me was Archie Leach just a week before he cut his throat."

thebeefmaster

When you're slapped, you'll take it and like it.

thebeefmaster

My mother thanks you. My father thanks you. My sister thanks you. And I thank you.

thebeefmaster

The stuff dreams are made of.

thebeefmaster

What a riotous romp!

thebeefmaster

Amazing movie

thebeefmaster

Oh, what a great film. I voted for The Maltese Falcon, so I can't add my vote here, but Barbara Stanwyck is one of my all time favorite actresses.

David Martin

The Third Man (1949)

Satan inside

"The Great Dictator" (1940) Charlie Chaplins best and most important movie. A timeless classic...🤩

silverarrow06

His Girl Friday (1940)

thebeefmaster

Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)

Octoburn

The Maltese Falcon

Raiford Hodges

Mrs Miniver

John Zelinka

well its actually 1930 but Howard Hughes "hells angels" its great

Cason

we should also guess which will win the YT poll 😁 actually It's A Wonderful Life would be best bet but you've done that one already...

Mannygogou

The Lady Eve (1941)... one of my favorites.

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947) This is hard. There are so many great choices, it's hard to narrow it down to one. Normally, I'd go with either Rebecca (1940) (Alfred Hitchcock's only movie to win the Academy Award for Best Picture) or Spellbound (1945) (Alfred Hitchcock + Salvidor Dali = one wild movie) but I can't choose either of those movies because both of them are hard to find on streaming services.

Chris Gronau

Which version? The Big Sleep (1946) is a great choice, but it comes in two (very) different cuts, commonly referred to as the Pre-Release and Theatrical cuts. To make the Theatrical release, they cut 20 minutes from the Pre-Release and added 22 minutes of new footage. So, while they have similar run-times (114 minutes vs. 116 minutes), they're quite a bit different....

Chris Gronau

Yankee Doodle Dandy..

Mike McLaughlin

The Maltese Falcon (1941)

Middohio

Choosing a movie to have an excuse to watch it makes perfect sense! That's what I would do too haha

Verowak

I honestly didn't know how many 1930s movies would be recommended 😅

Verowak

Notorious, Carey Grant, Ingrid Bergman, directed by Alfred Hitchcock

Mikeljoe

You watched my favorite when I won the Marble race, so I must add Citizen Kane (1941)

Cliff Adams

His Girl Friday (1940), Comedy/Romance, Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell

SaRahRahWA

Citizen Kane (1941)

John Danziger

Since you've already done "Casablanca" (1942), I'll second Scott Melton's suggestion, "The Big Sleep" (1946). But if I get another choice because I agreed with Scott, there's "Key Largo" (1948). Again with Bogey and Bacall. But also with Edward G. Robinson, Lionel Barrymore, and Claire Trevor (who won an Oscar for her role).

Miles E Coburn

This is tough because I have a massive blind spot when it comes to older movies, so this is more of a “which classic 40s movie do I want an excuse to finally watch” poll… So with that said I’m gonna go with David Lean’s ‘Brief Encounter’ (1945) … because it was apparently a major inspiration for Todd Haynes when he made one of my favourite films, 2015’s Carol.

Razor Bikini

Arsenic and Old Lace, it is my mother’s favorite movie and it is actually pretty funny. It is a screwball comedy. CHARGE!!

MrDannySteele

David Lean's drama/romance/mystery GREAT EXPECTATIONS (1946) is not to be missed.

AuntVes

Rope (1948)

Urfhil

Starting with the 40s excludes 'Bringing Up Baby' (1938) 😭 Well, then how about 'Gilda' (1946)?

FermatSim

The Big Sleep! 1946. Bogart & Bacall. Screenplay by William Faulkner. Classic 'noir' with the snappiest writing.

scott melton

Rope (1948)

Chris Bergbower

Laura (1944)
