The Hunt for Red October (1990) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

One of the winners of the latest Patreon Suggestion poll!!

I'm really loving submarine movies. I'm clearly an expert at combat strategies to boot! 🤣

An absolutely stellan cast 🤣A lot of actors that I've seen before, and get to see in a different role.

I'm not sure if it's just me, but Sam Neill looked a bit like Hugo Weaving in the Matrix movies. I'm not sure what it is, but I would get small glimpses of Hugo Weaving at times.

Alec Baldwin was ok, he didn't steal any scene. I sort of expected him to be a scene stealer since I've heard of the Baldwins for a while (I don't know how many there are, but I feel like Alec is the most well known of the family?)

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  You can set picture in picture by right clicking twice on the video and selecting "Picture in picture". The right clicking twice is a bit tricky, because you have to right click, then move your cursor so it's not on the menu, then right click again

Thank you so much everyone for your support, you are amazing!!

I couldn't do this without you <3

That's actually really awesome!! Just little reminders that the books are connected and to get updates on Ramius!!

I have read most of the Tom Clancy, Jack Ryan books. When you got excited at the end of the movie with idea of the 2 of them going fishing, a cool thing that is weaved into the subsequent books is the friendship between Jack Ryan and Captain Ramius. It's not in every book, but just enough to get the sense they became good friends.

DarthChef

It was a fun movie, and I definitely want to check out more Jack Ryan movies in the future :D

Verowak

More Jack Ryan movies - I really liked Clear and Present Danger as well as Patriot Games (Harrison Ford as Ryan). Sum of All Fears is pretty okay as well. Thanks for doing this one.

Damon Corrigan

I read "under rated" as "under the radar" 🤣

Verowak

I'm probably gonna be alone in recommending this movie, but Down Periscope is probably the only submarine based comedy out there and I think it's quite under rated.

Ootlander

Oh wow, that's a lot of different versions! I would definitely watch the theatrical cut hahaha. I'm very impressed that they reshot many of the scenes to have the lips match up, that's definitely not the norm from what I've seen!

Verowak

That's really neat, thanks for this :D

Verowak

I may have seen him, but don't remember him from "The Right Stuff" 😅

Verowak

Thanks for the rec! I saw "Run" twice and thought "Run Lola Run" lol

Verowak

I always prefer to watch a movie in its original language instead of a dubbed version, so no downside for me with "Das Boot" haha. I'm not sure how that is for reactions, I feel like I would want to have the movie in English in the bottom of the screen for the edit

Verowak

It's interesting that they didn't just continue with a specific actor to portray Jack Ryan in the different movies. That could have been pretty neat! I've only heard of "Das Boot" from that list, and I didn't know there was a comedic one, but it makes sense lol. Thank you for the recommendations

Verowak

Thanks for the recommendations! Two movies that I'm not familiar with at all, even though they came out not too long ago, wow.

Verowak

Hahaha that's amazing! Do you get responses from time to time?

Das Boot is generally considered to be the all-time classic submarine movie. The big problem with it, though, is that there are several different cuts out there. It started out life as a 6 hour television mini-series for German television. That mini-series has been cut down to a 2-1/2 hour theatrical release, a 3-1/2 hour director's cut, and 4 hour 42 minute DVD release. On the bright side, both the theatrical cut and the director's cut have excellent English language dubs. All of the principal actors are fluent in both German and English, and they all dubbed their own lines in both languages. They even reshot many of the scenes so that the lip movements matched the dialog..... Another classic submarine movie (at least, submarine adjacent) is The Enemy Below. Highly recommended. If you're going to continue the Jack Ryan movies, the next one is Patriot Games, which actually has Harrison Ford playing Jack Ryan....

Music by Basil Poledouris, who also did "Conan The Barbarian", "Red Dawn", "Robocop", and "Starship Troopers"

Top notch submarine movies: "Das Boot Director's Cut" (1981) "Gray Lady Down" (1978) "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" (1954 version) based on the book by Jules Verne submarine adjacent, great companion to watch with "Das Boot": "Greyhound" (2020) comedy: "Operation Petticoat" (1959) directed by Blake Edwards "Down Periscope" (1996)

As a gamer, you might be interested to know that before "Red October", Tom Clancy had written the naval combat game "Harpoon", which was later adapted into a series of computer games. Harpoon was so accurately detailed that it was used at the US Naval Academy to teach modern naval combat tactics to cadets.

JAKH

When you compare "Red October" to the real events depicted in "K-19", I think that it is pretty obvious where Tom Clancy got the idea for "Red October".

JAKH

You also saw Scott Glenn, playing Capt. Bart Mancuso of the USS Dallas, in "The Right Stuff" as astronaut Alan Sheppard.

Dr. Jack Ryan Sr., PhD. is not the same character as Jack Ryan Jr. When Tom Clancy got divorced, his wife received not only half the royalties to the books that he had already written, but half of the income for any future books focusing on the same main characters. So he stopped writing about Jack Ryan Sr. and switched to writing about his son, Jack Ryan Jr.

JAKH

Another classic submarine movie is Run Silent, Run Deep (1958).

Captain Verowak!!! I love it. “Das Boot” is widely considered to be the best submarine film ever made. It’s about a German U-boat crew at the end of the war when they were losing badly. It’s very stressful. Only downside is that it’s in German so you have to read subtitles.

Bruce Wesley

This could be a great start to a tom Clancy (jack ryan) watch series, played by a number of actors over several movies and finally krasinski in the TV series. The best Jack ryan is always a good debate. Need to get into one of the classic sub movies for wwii "Run silent run deep", "operation pacific", "the enemy below", "das boot" for sure, "up periscope" and the comedic blend "down periscope" is a great one.

Bubba Fett

If you're looking for more submarine thrillers, I'd suggest "Phantom" (2013). It's loosely based on the final voyage of K-129, a Soviet sub that sank under mysterious circumstances during the Cold War, amid rumors that, like Ramius, the crew had gone rogue. I'd also tack "Hunter Killer" onto the suggestion list. It's kind of a poor man's HFRO, but as always, Gerard Butler is solid. The transition from Russian to English occurs at the word "Armageddon" because it's pronounced the same in both languages.

"I would liked to have seen Montana" is something I regularly type into coop game chats whenever I die.. so regularly in fact I typed into a game of CoD Warzone earlier today! Didn't get a response though sadly.
