Casablanca (1942) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

The winner of our romance poll!

A really swell movie, and I looked up what they said in "When Harry Met Sally" and they were talking about Casablanca!

It's very interesting how the romance aspect doesn't show up until later than usual. We set everything up at the beginning, then eventually Ilsa walks in and we start diving into the romance.

Really quite neat! There are SO many quotes that I've heard of before, I love it 🤩

1940 movies are so special because they're just so different from what I'm used to. I love the time capsules

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  You can set picture in picture by right clicking twice on the video and selecting "Picture in picture". The right clicking twice is a bit tricky, because you have to right click, then move your cursor so it's not on the menu, then right click again

Thank you so much everyone for your support, you are amazing!!

I couldn't do this without you <3

I thought Thelma Ritter was related to John Ritter 'til yesterday (and I've been lovin' both for most of my 56 years)! 🤣 A.I. Google results say they're related and even give a false date of death for Thelma... but official biographies/sources set the record straight.

I'm hearing so many movies for the first time every time I watch a black and white movie, it's exciting!! I just made a note to have a Humphrey Bogart poll at some point :D

Verowak

I guess Hepburn was a common last name if they weren't related! I always thought they were related 😅

Verowak

I can't believe all the character actors that are in this movie that you will find woven throughout so many movies in the 40s and 50s. But as much as I like this movie, for me, real vintage Bogart is The African Queen and The Big Sleep. Of course you really have to watch The Caine Mutiney. That was probably Bogeys best acting.

Scott Howard

Thanks, Vero! ❤️‍🩹 Since you're acquainted with Mr. Bogart, now, check him out in THE AFRICAN QUEEN (1951) with Katharine Hepburn... or in SABRINA (1954) with Audrey Hepburn. The two Hepburns aren't related. 😏

I absolutely love hearing where famous quotes came from!! I agree, the love triangle is nicely balanced, and it all makes sense, really. It's very realistic, and the ending they chose to do is also very nice. I feel like it could be fun to make a short film à-la 1940s. The dramatic deaths, the amazing backgrounds when driving, and the speech pattern too :D

So...many...famous...quotes!!! When I saw this movie for the first time a few years ago, just like you I was expecting a couple, but was blown away by how many there were. I've seen it a few times now, but I still get emotional when they are belting out La Marseillaise (which as an Englishman feels a bit weird lol). I actually like seeing how dramatic deaths were acted out back then, they should be dramatic, someone just died :-) Considering what you read about how filming started before the script was finished, I think the love triangle is really nicely balanced, no-one is the bad guy. I've seen precious few black and white movies so will be happy to check out more if and when you get to them, older movies have such style.

I'm really excited to check black and white movies out!! I see where Spielberg gets his influence for using shadows so much!! lol

So glad you are checking out the classic B&W era. There is an amazing B&W world to be discovered and enjoyed. The use of light and shadow can be an incredible aspect of film making. "Here's looking at you kid."
