David Lynch movie poll!

With his recent passing, I figured it's time I do one of these polls. I've heard so many people mention him in the past, and it seems that I haven't heard of most of his movies 😅

The Twin Peaks TV series is not on here for obvious reasons, though it seems that there was a series in 1989-1991 and a reboot/remake(?) in 2017. When I get to those series, I'll be asking more questions about it before starting it/them lol

Normally you can vote for multiple options, but I messed up so you can only vote for one (and I can't edit the poll to allow multiple) I'm sorry about that :( This poll will end on January 24th at 11am EST / 4pm UTC - the same time as the romance poll (if you haven't voted yet, follow that link!).

I would love to know what your favourite David Lynch movie is (just please no spoilers), or if you can rank your top 5 favourites.

May a David Lynch movie win 🤣

-Vero 🥰

I'm super curious to see what it's all about 🤩

I absolutely can not wait for your reaction to Mulholland Drive. In my opinion it’s a very polarizing movie. And I’m sure once it is all set and done, you will definitely have a lot of questions. Which I’ll do my best to answer for you. Almost 24 years after its release, I’m still trying to figure it out 🫨

Theatrical is 137 min (2h 17m), edited for a 2h 20m theater time slot Extended/TV version is 176min (2h 56m), edited for a 4h TV run with commercials

JAKH

I will watch whichever version I can find online. Sometimes they specify what the version is, other times they don't

My favorite David Lynch movie is The Elephant Man, but they're all good. I even like Dune (1984) even though Lynch disowned it and was very reluctant to talk about it because he was (and remained) so upset by the whole ordeal. I like the extended versions of this, but they are fan edits or attributed to "Alan Smithee". I like these versions more because they cover more of the story. (Btw, if you really want to see more of the Dune story, there are two SyFy miniseries which cover Dune, Dune Messiah, and Children of Dune. The primary problem they have, however, is the low production quality because they had a low-budget and were made for cable TV. But, I enjoyed them all the same. Twin Peaks (2017) is a straight continuation exactly 25 years after S2 of the original show from 1990-1991. Avoiding spoilers, I can say that it's not a retcon and fits precisely in continuity. There are actually 3 Twin Peaks properties that you probably need on your radar: 1. Twin Peaks (1990-1991) (S1: 8 eps, S2: 22 eps) (Note: Lynch only directed 5 of these episodes and there was a lot of studio interference. Still, I liked it and still rewatch it from time-to-time.) 2. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992) (Feature Film) 3. Twin Peaks (2017) (18 eps) (All co-written with Mark Frost and solely directed by David Lynch) Bonus: The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer (1990). Spin-off novel from the 1990-91 series by David's daughter, Jennifer. If you're really interested in more Laura Palmer backstory, this is a good source. Bonus 2: The Secret History of Twin Peaks (2016) by Mark Frost. Dossier-style background info on the history of Twin Peaks and the characters. Bonus 3: Twin Peaks: The Final Dossier (2017). More background in the same style as the first. *It may be more fun if you watch this alone in a darkened room and a good sound system.

Seems you looked it up at the perfect time!! So many movies are not available through streaming, it's really unfortunate

There are 2 versions of "Dune" (1984). The theatrical one is disliked by a lot of fans, and the longer extended edition is much preferred between the 2. The extended edition drops about 15m but adds back about 40 min more, including a background intro for viewers who hadn't read the book (and some really good instrumentals. This version used to run regularly on the Sci-Fi Channel in the 1990's and 2000's. Most people who hadn't seen it in theaters have seen the extended version on Sci-Fi (or later (SyFy). I would recommend this version in preference to the shorter version.

At the time I was looking and it was not available anywhere for streaming... but today, Wild At Heart is actually showing in the theaters... I see a 9pm showtime!... wait, this Friday 1/24/25 wow

Mannygogou

No, just the original series from the early 90s, but I’d be interested to watch the newer ones, after a rewatch of the original

James Hadden

I've tried to recommend Wild At Heart before 🙂

Mannygogou

I have not seen most of these... but I've seen 4 of them.

Mannygogou

The more you watch, the more you'll understand. He was in a constant state of evolution. TWIN PEAKS is a good example. The third season happened a quarter of a century after TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME (1992) movie and it still felt like TWIN PEAKS... but he put a spin on nearly everything viewers thought was established firmly. You might also enjoy, in your own time, shorts and music videos he made with Chrysta Bell on YouTube. He's just an interesting character and I'm so glad he was able to carve out a career being himself.

AuntVes

Yay someone else who hasn't seen these!! 😊

Verowak

Oh poop, I guess it's a single option poll now 😅My mistake :( Thanks for letting me know

Verowak

Confusion and fascination sound great! Did you watch the latest Twin Peaks as well?

Verowak

I'm honestly so curious to see what his style is like. I've always heard that you can tell when it's a David Lynch movie.

Verowak

I've never seen any of these. I'm curious to find out what they are like.

SaRahRahWA

I’m not sure which type of poll you actually wanted as you said we can vote for multiple options but the poll is a single choice only

James Hadden

Having only seen one of these movies this poll has proven to me I know nothing about David Lynch. It was Dune, and after reading other comments it seems it doesn’t really count, so I won’t be voting for that. I did watch Twin Peaks back in the day and my only memories of it are confusion and fascination.

James Hadden

My favourite David-Lynch-Movie is either Blue Velvet or 1990's Wild at Heart.....

ELOI

They're all so good... but BLUE VELVET (1986) is most indicative of his strange style, but is still understandable as a narrative. THE ELEPHANT MAN (1980) and DUNE (1984) are both good and worth watching, but if one didn't know Mr. Lynch directed them, the movies themselves wouldn't give many clues to that end. ERASERHEAD (1977) and MULHOLLAND DRIVE (2001) are so esoteric, that people tend to either love or hate them. I could go on and on about Mr. Lynch. I love him and I hope you'll watch and appreciate all of his stuff. You must watch THE STRAIGHT STORY (1999), a docudrama he directed, if not for your channel, for yourself.

AuntVes

Hahaha it seems like Dune is doing pretty well so far! It's still early though, things may change up quite a lot

Verowak

I'm really rooting for The Elephant Man. It's not the most "Lynchian," like Eraserhead or Mulholland Drive, but I think it's a true masterpiece and one that really hits your soul. But if Dune wins--the movie that David Lynch wholly disavowed--that'll be a crime.
