WarGames (1983) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

The winner of the Patreon Suggestion poll!!

I can see why this movie won!! What a treat to watch 🤩

It's even more interesting to see the impact that this movie has had on computer security and hacking laws. These are all things that I had no knowledge about, and reading the IMDB trivia was so damn useful.

I love how someone thought of this in the early 80s.

Thank you for voting for this one! I have no idea what all the others movies would be like, but I'm so glad this one won 🥰

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  You can set picture in picture by right clicking twice on the video and selecting "Picture in picture". The right clicking twice is a bit tricky, because you have to right click, then move your cursor so it's not on the menu, then right click again

Thank you so much everyone for your support, you are amazing!!

All of those are some great movies. I've seen / have in my library all of them except "Charlie Wilson's War". I read the book "Fail Safe" by Eugene Burdick and Harvey Wheeler when I was a teenager (13 in 1968) and I missed seeing the movie in the theaters in 1964. I was so happy to see it had been released on VHS in 1989 and have purchased a copy on every format since.

Whenever I see "No Way Out" I always think of the episode "One Way Out" in Andor lol It seems that I need to watch the movie so I can separate the two 😅

The computers will do exactly what they are programmed to do, no second guessing. For some things it's great, but the important decisions shouldn't be made by computers 😨

As a child of the 80's I grew up with this movie and have seen it countless times and I never miss the chance to see someone new watch it for the first time. It's a good eye opener when it comes the idea of a pre-A.I. computer being given control of our missile defense system without the humans in the loop and the lesson of why relying on computers all the time doesn't always work.

Welcome Wade! Ferris Bueller's Day Off has quickly been put on my list to watch soon!!

Been watching your edited reactions for a while now but this one sold me to come over here! You definitely need to watch Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Wade Wallenstein

I've heard of Ferris Bueller's Day Off mentioned a lot but haven't seen it yet! Hackers sounds neat, I like computer/hacking movies

Glad you watched this one. Matthew Broderick is such a fun actor to watch. If you haven't seen Ferris Beuller's Day Off, its a very fun watch. Also Hackers is another favorite computer movie of mine.

Benjamin Bradtke

I love that they did so much research and really wanted the movie to be accurate. That makes a movie just that much better when I find that out, thanks for that!!

Verowak

Thanks for the trivia! I love that you recognize some of the areas that they filmed in, that seems like such a fun thing to be able to notice. It seemed like they really did their research to portray the accuracy, which is a massive bonus. It's so neat how movies can be time capsules!!

Verowak

Agreed. Sneakers is amazingly good, and it's always nice to see a movie with an intelligently written script.

Chris Gronau

Not based on a book btw, it was an original script written by two guys, Lawrence Lasker & Walter F. Parkes, who basically just did a lot of research, talked with real hackers, even took a tour of NORAD and were able to interview some high-up military folks. Apparently there were also hackers on the set to watch over those specific scenes and point out inaccuracies. Even though this movie was huge hit and the script was nominated for an Oscar, Lasker & Parkes have only written one other movie together, Sneakers (1992), which IMO is another one of those hidden gems.

This was a fun reaction. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I saw it when it first came out. It was cool because several of the outdoor scenes were actually filmed in the Seattle area where I lived. The scene where Jennifer takes David on her scooter to see the computer geeks was filmed outside Kincaid Hall. You can tell due to the unique design of Kincaid's windows. Kincaid Hall actually housed the zoology department at the time, but back then the computer science building was right next door, so the movie got points for verisimilitude. 😁 A couple bits of trivia about this movie. First, this movie came out when Ronald Reagan was President of the United States. After watching this movie, he asked his generals if the events of the movie were possible. They said that not only was it possible, they did it to the Russians on a regular basis. This led to much updating of computer security.... Second this movie is a favorite in Silicon Valley due to its accurate portrayal of computer hacking as it existed in the 1980's.

Chris Gronau

Ah, WarGames. A real WOPR of a movie.
