Ronin (1998) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Thank you one of our Producers for this amazing movie request!

Would you look at that... another 90s action movie (though not quite the same tone as the ones I've seen so far)

I do love seeing some Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings actors every now and then πŸ₯°

I love thriller, intrigue, puzzles and this movie is right up there. At the beginning, it was clear that these guys didn't watch enough movies to know it was a TRAP! They have no excuse either, since Star Wars came out 21 years before this movie 🀣

Action packed, with a nice story to follow and a good conclusion too!

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  You can set picture in picture by right clicking twice on the video and selecting "Picture in picture". The right clicking twice is a bit tricky, because you have to right click, then move your cursor so it's not on the menu, then right click again

Thank you so much everyone for your support, I couldn't do this without you πŸ₯°

I personally prefer going into a movie with no knowledge of the events (if they are based on a true story or even somewhat based on an event that happened at some point). It gets rid of any expectations that I could have for the movie and story 😁

I wouldn't worry too much about forgetting everything you learned about the 47 ronin. The 47 ronin mentioned in the movie is a true story about 47 samurai who went to great lengths to avenge the death of their master, and became legends in Japanese history because of that. The Keanu Reeves movie is a *highly* fictionalized version that bears almost no resemblance to the actual historical event.

Actually, Princess Diana died on August 31, 1997 and Ronin was filmed from November 1997 to March 1998. The tunnel in Paris where they filmed the car chase was reportedly not the same tunnel as the one in which Diana was killed even though both tunnels look similar.

Seeing a movie again for basically the first time is a joy! I agree that De Niro's expressions were the most realistic, it's just so odd seeing that since usually people who are CIA/military/spy are cool as a cucumber all the time lol The more I think of it, the more I really enjoyed the car chase because it was so well done. I haven't seen the Fast and Furious movies, but I imagine it would be pretty hilarious seeing those car chases/races(?) immediately afterwards 🀣 I have no idea how Hereford is supposed to be said, but I do think people would be a bit afraid to correct him lol

Verowak

Ah yeah, people just jumping to conclusions to be outraged. It's good that that aspect of humanity hasn't changed over the years πŸ˜‚

Verowak

Goodfellas is one that I need to watch, and Backdraft because of Hans Zimmer 🀣

Yeah if you have YT premium you don't get ads. Now that you mention it, there really wasn't profanity though I did notice there was some weird audio sync/dubbing being done and now it makes sense!!! It being a commercial TV version fits the edit very well

Verowak

@JAKH Ah that could be it, though I still find it weird that they don't just have the regular version. I'll need to check future movies for this weird edit

Verowak

Oh I'm glad you were able to still watch it with the YT edit. That's something I'll take more care to check out when watching a YT free version. I honestly did not think it would be edited differently, so today we all learned something!

Verowak

I didn't know he was in that one, it's already on my list!

The edit of this movie showing on YT is all over the place but I was still able to resync my copy when necessary. I’m sure there is a logic to it but it felt like random scenes where just cut short a little, almost certainly not affecting anything important, although criminal to shorten the final car chase. I enjoyed this rewatch as it felt absolutely like a first time watch for me. I’m pretty sure I hadn’t seen it since its release. The only things I remembered were De Niro and the most realistic car chases I’d ever seen up to that point. I knew nothing about the plot or other actors going back into it. Regarding the car chases I think they hold up really well and still better the vast majority of those that came after. I imagine they were given a lot of the Peugeot and Citroen cars free if they showed them in a good light (keeping up with the Audi and BMW as an example of unrealistic performance). I personally think De Niro’s expressions were the most realistic when driving at high speed into oncoming traffic - trained agent or not. The plot kept me guessing the whole time and I never knew where it was heading next. A nice combination of intrigue and action. Good producer pick. I wonder if no one felt comfortable telling the great Robert De Niro how to correctly pronounce Hereford. Stellan seemed to nail it though. Speaking of pronunciation I say Jean Reno basically the same as you just with more of a Brummie accent than French 😁

Thanks for the info. I'll keep that in mind while watching any future YouTube free movies. I find it odd that the studios allow editing of films without a disclaimer from YouTube.

The story of the 47 ronin is a real event from the Tokugawa Shogunate Period (1600-1850) "The Loyal 47 Ronin" (1958) directed by Kunio Watanabe "Chushingura" (1962) Know the real story before watching the Keanu Reeves movie.

JAKH

There was some controversy about this movie when it was released. The second chase, on the highway and in the tunnels, is set in the Peripherique around Paris and was filmed on location. This is the same place where Princess Diana was killed less than a year before the movie was released. People who don't know much about how movies are made didn't understand that the movie chase had been filmed long before the real life crash.

For your Robert De Niro poll: "Heat" (1995) directed by Michael Mann "Backdraft" (1991) directed by Ron Howard, music by Hans Zimmer "Jackie Brown" (1997) directed by Quentin Tarantino, story from a book by Elmore Leonard "Righteous Kill" (2008) "Goodfellas" (1990) directed by Martin Scorsese, *True Story* "Midnight Run" (1988)

My guess is that the YT free version is a version that has been edited for time to fit into a 2h 30m broadcast TV time slot with commercials. The first chase from the ambush, through Vieux Nice, until the crash at the coast view cafe is short by 2 minutes. The second chase through Paris is also short by another 2 minutes

JAKH

Great reaction! Btw, I had problems too with syncing as others have, but the free Youtube version was perfect all the way through. (I had no commercials because of YT+). Out of curiosity, I checked where the films first diverged. it's around 10:48 on the YT version where Deidre's introduction is greatly reduced. I noticed that the profanity also seems to have been cut from the YT version (among other things). Maybe this is a commercial TV version of the movie?

Watched your reaction in tandem with the YouTube free version - GREAT SUCCESS! Even though I gave up watching it on Amazon Prime VIdeo after about 20 minutes, I saw where the YouTube version made cuts. I noticed the intro credits with the red 'RONIN' screen was shorter in length and the scene after the firearms purchase where Sean Bean got out of the car when he became ill, it was edited to remove the part where we actually see him puke behind the car. Thank you for a great reaction! I recognized former Olympian Katarina Witt and was surprised that she did some acting. I was shocked when we saw her outcome - did not expect that. Among the De Niro movies that showcase his range of roles are "The King of Comedy" (1982) and "Cape Fear", a 1991 remake of a Robert Mitchum movie. English actress Natascha McElhone was in a well-received movie called "The Truman Show" (1998) and I remember that she had a recurring role in the David Duchovny series, "Californication" (with an American accent!).

Stuff happens. I've seen even bigger issues with syncing by folks reacting in some European countries because of a difference in the video format standards. The U.S.-based films and series LOOK the same but the timing is always just a little bit off. Thanks for your efforts.

ButtercupsTrueLove

Huh, that's interesting. I watched it on YouTube (free with ads) and on there is says it's 1:53:56 but I just looked up Ronin on IMDB and it says 2h 2m there. I'm not sure why there's a difference. That's an 8 minute difference somehow. I'm sorry, I usually check to make sure the duration of the movie I'm watching matches with IMDB, but it seems this time I didnt :(

Verowak

I was watching "Ronin" on Amazon Prime Video but kept losing sync with your reaction after less than a minute. I tried for about 20 minutes into the movie but just spent too much time re-syncing. AFAIK, there is only one version of the film - no director's cut or special edition - so I'm confused as to what the issue might be.
