Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

It's time for another Producer pick!!

Continuing on with Indiana Jones, though I will say that I prefer the first one. I need to see more Spielberg movies with women in a leading role to see how his characterization changed over the years. Laura Dern in Jurassic Park was great, but that movie was based on a book, so the character was already developed.

I saw that George Lucas was the writer, and it turns out that he had recently divorced, so maybe that influenced how Willie was written. All this to say, that I really hope we don't have another character similar to Willie in the third one.

I really loved seeing Ke Huy Quan as short round though!! He's just too adorable.

This being written by Lucas explains the terrible romance too 🤣

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  You can set picture in picture by right clicking twice on the video and selecting "Picture in picture". The right clicking twice is a bit tricky, because you have to right click, then move your cursor so it's not on the menu, then right click again

Thank you so much everyone for your support, I couldn't do this without you 🥰

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

The fact that she doesn't change really irks me. At least we know Steven Spielberg is not a comedy genius 🤣 Indy and Short Round make such a great team!! I would love to have more of them to b e honest, it's great to see Indy be caring and them just being so in sync and rely on each other. So Mythbusters tested the raft from the plane and the only way that you would have a chance at surviving is it you used it like a parachute. The way that it's done in the movie is not survivable 😅

Okay, so it took me this long to watch your reaction to Doom. I have to say, I watched the hell out of this one as a kid. I can understand objectively how Raiders is a more grounded, consistent movie (and most people feel that way). That said, I think I've watched "Doom" well over a hundred times in my life, and "Raiders" only a fraction of that. I do agree about the Willie character. I like the idea of her. I think it could've been a lot of fun to have a squeamish female lead (though not quite as hysterical as she was in the movie) to contrast off of the crazy happenings, and to contrast off of Marion from "Raiders." But in order to really make that work, I think the character needed to grow more over the course of the movie. Willie doesn't ever really change, which is kind of an odd storytelling choice. You touched on this in the imdb trivia, but I remember reading that throughout filming, Kate Capshaw repeatedly begged Spielberg to allow her to tone down her character, as she was convinced it would drive audiences crazy. But Spielberg assured her that it was "funny." Also, yes, Short Round is amazing. I love his relationship with Indy. And this is one of my favorite Ford performances of all time. He just goes so completely all in, on both the physicality, but also with the touches of humor (like when he realizes his gun is missing). Random note: One complaint people often have about this movie is that they think that Indy and co. would've been crushed after jumping out of an airplane atop the inflatable raft. I think I even read someone claim that they'd hit the ground at "terminal velocity." It's like they didn't even watch the movie. It's one long, unbroken shot, and we can clearly see that the raft is creating enough wind resistance to act as a sort of parachute. By the time they hit the ground, they've decelerated quite a bit. In fact, I think the Myth Busters episode you alluded to was about that. They concluded that it actually would be possible to survive that.

Growing up where I did, no one ever enforced the ratings for movies 😅

I like everything except for Willie. I'll have to check out more 1930s movies it seems :D

Nope, just heard a motorcycle outside lol

I’ve always thought this movie has one of the best soundtracks of John Williams’ career. And even though every single main character (protagonists and antagonists) are different levels of annoying, obnoxious, arrogant, rude, ignorant, and examples of bad decision making, I find this movie to be incredibly funny, outrageous/over the top, scary, and somehow it all works for me. And once you’ve seen certain types of movies from the 1930s, you understand more of what they were going for when they made this one.

That comment at the end about the bearded biker, were you thinking of someone in particular? :)

You will find that the best women characters in 1980's, 1990's, & 2000's action and sci-fi movies are in movies produced by Gale Anne Hurd (everything from "Terminator" 1 & 2, "Aliens", & "Tremors" to "The Walking Dead"). This was Kathleen Kennedy (who had George Lucas banned from the sets of several of the the latest SW live action series, including "Acolyte"). "South Park" did a whole episode dedicated to RIP'ing her and her women characters.

This is rated PG, as was "Airplane". Spielberg used it as an example to lobby the ratings board to add a new rating in between PG and R.

Short Round was the MVP for me in this one. He's such a joy! It makes sense to be less annoyed with characters because you know what to expect, I think I'll try to go into a movie rewatch with that in mind in the future :D There are very few exceptions for movies with child ensembles, like The Goonies (because Sean Astin is in it!!) I didn't know Ke Huy Quan was in it too! Seeing actors that I like in movies in their earlier roles usually bypasses things because I want to see what they're like when they were younger lol

So many people love the third one, I'm very much looking forward to that one!

There are so many action sequences that I just love in this movie, but the overall story is pretty awful. Even with suspension of disbelief the tiny water tower flooding the miles of mine tunnels beggars belief. Setting the area around river level and braking through to the river for the endless flow would have satisfied me. I can accept all of the other ridiculous moments but that one always bugged me. Overall I still like this movie, helped out in no small part (pardon the pun) by Short Round, such a good addition and great chemistry with Indy. Luckily for me (as someone who enjoys rewatching movies) I usually find annoying characters less annoying second or third time around. I actually find Willie bearable now. Maybe it’s just because I know what to expect, who knows. My ranking for the trilogy is probably 3, 1, 2 - I say probably as I always find it difficult to put sequels ahead of origin movies, and it’s very close. For more Ke Huy Quan I’d have recommended The Goonies but you don’t do child ensembles.

The third film is my absolute favorite in the series, and closer resembles Raiders.
