Jojo Rabbit (2019) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

The winner of the Sam Rockwell Patreon poll!!

What a pleasant surprise! So many great performances in this gem of a movie, and though it included several things that I typically don't enjoy... this movie was well worth the watch.

As usual, Sam Rockwell is fantastic. He's not the main character, but he's still very important to the story.

Jojo, Elsa, Rosie and Captain K were a joy to watch, and really made this a great experience 🀩

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  You can set picture in picture by right clicking twice on the video and selecting "Picture in picture". The right clicking twice is a bit tricky, because you have to right click, then move your cursor so it's not on the menu, then right click again

I only included the actors that were a joy to watch 😁

You're missing the other adult... that maybe no one likes - Imaginary Hitler! 😊

Oh wow, so this movie hits close to home for you in a lot of ways! I'm really glad to hear that you found your way though, this movie shows just how impressionable people can be. They really did a great job making us feel for the characters, and the characters are so real! It's a very important message for sure, it was a great watch. I'm very bummed that the "happy and silly inner child" is sort of his trademark, I would love to see a completely serious Taika Waititi film. The only aspects of the movie that I disliked are comedic parts, his silly comedy is really not for me. Similarly to Thor: Love and Thunder, the dramatic parts are amazing, and the silly comedic parts will have me suffering through them 🀣

Moon is high on my list, I just have to fit it in somehow with all the other stuff high on my list lol

I'm very surprised that the younger actors did so well! I didn't know that about the Beatles, so it's just an extra layer for this movie 😁

Verowak

I'm definitely more open to his films after watching this one :D

Verowak

Oh yes, the other kid was great! Jojo's second best friend, promoted to first!

In addition to your notes: It wasn't just the Beatles though. At that time, many artists and groups published their songs in different european languages like Spanish, German, French and Italian. The european music scene was much more diverse and not as English dominated as it is now, so if you wanted to have success all over europe, you had to record your songs in different languages. This only changed in the mid to late 60ies...

Love this movie and love your reaction! It's a movie I can enjoy from beginning to end. The characters' one-on-one interaction with each other is wonderfully written. I really like the casting of the young people and like seeing Sam Rockwell and Scarlett Johansson in smaller roles and films. On a side note, The Beatles used to hone their songwriting and live performances by playing clubs in Hamburg as well as back home in the UK, hence the German language lyrics to "I Wanna Hold Your Hand". This was before they introduced themselves on the Ed Sullivan Show. On a side side note, director-writer Robert Zemeckis made an early comedy, "I Wanna Hold Your Hand", about one night in the lives of a group of teenagers in (I think) New Jersey who try their best to score some tickets to see The Beatles at the Ed Sullivan Show in NYC.

I hope you consider the runner up Moon for a near future reaction. Its a great film. Jojo Rabbit is a fun movie but Moon is a great film if you know what I mean. also Sam Rockwell is actually the star of Moon. He is kind of just third banana comic relief in Jojo.

P.S.: The "really tall guy" is Stephen Merchant, a very popular british writer, comedian and actor. You might have seen him "Logan", if you got around to watching this great Marvel movie...πŸ€”πŸ™‚

Phew... I am so happy you liked that movie, because I think it is not only truly beautiful, but also very important in its message. 😊 It is so heartwrenching to see the fantasy world of a fanatic little boy and the real world he lives in collapse in such a brutal way...πŸ™ˆ One moment you laugh about some of the absurdities and in the next moment they get all to violently real. It hits me everytime very hard to watch this, because in many ways, I was this boy. Or better, I was a boy like Jojo at that age. See, I am from Germany and I spent the first twelve years of my life in the GDR, the communist dictatorship half of the then divided country. Just like him I was filled to the brim with all this propaganda bullshit I learned in school, took part in the youth organisations (the depiction in the movie is sadly all too close to the truth - as absurd as it seems) and saw all this "teaching the childrens war" as a big adventure. And just like him I was raised by a single mother who tried to reason with me to save the innocent child that I was. And like Jojo, I fought lots of stupid fights with her and everybody who tried to convice me that the allmighty party was wrong. (Not that there were many, standing up against them could be very dangerous.) I would have made a perfect little stupid soldier. Now that I'm older I really admire my mother how she handled me at that time and I'm for ever grateful to her for that. I saw much of her in Scarlett Johanssons portrayal of the mother...😍 Then suddenly (at least in my eyes) the Soviet Empire collapsed and East Germany was on its own, the people threw over the now powerless regime and got reunited with West Germany shortly after. Long story short, I can perfectly relate to this boy and how he looked at the world, because I experienced first hand what propaganda, hate speech and fake news could do to a very impressionable kid. It was a very hard reality check, when the world I was trained to serve suddenly ceased to exist and non of the things I learned mattered anymore. But I got along and found my way into this new world. πŸ™‚ This movie depicts the intellectual world of a fanaticized ten-year-old with a very creative imagination so very good...😱🀩 And Taika Waititis way of playing the imaginary Hitler is spot on. In the colorful fantasy world of an imaginative boy, who knows next to nothing about the real Hitler, he would probably look and behave exactly like this. The depiction of the last days of the Nazi-regime was shockingly real - the madness, the panic, the fighting old people and child soldiers, none of this is exaggerated or made up (well, except for the clones πŸ˜…πŸ™ˆ). As for Taika Waititi, I think you got to know him at his weakest, while making a blockbuster. He is an auteur at heart and is always really good when he has full control over the movies he makes. "Jojo Rabbit" was his absolute dream project he wanted to make for many years and thanks to the success of his "Thor" movies he got the chance. You can see and feel his passion for this story in every second of the film. "Hunt for the Wilderpeople" has a tone very similar to "Jojo Rabbit" but less tragic and "What we do in the shadows" is simply one of the funniest comedies I've ever seen. πŸ™‚ This happy and silly inner child is part of his identity, so a completely serious dramatic Taika Waititi movie will most likely never happen...πŸ€”πŸ˜… Anyway, thanks for reading and for your great reaction and for giving this movie a chance...😊🀩

silverarrow06

Ah, you watched it 😊 I see you counted 4 actors... you missed one πŸ˜„

Mannygogou

Delighted you liked this one! Taika can make some great films. I know I've mentioned it before but 'Hunt For The Wilderpeople' is a fantastic film as well as 'What We Do In The Shadows'.
