Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

This reaction is brought to you by one of our Producers!!!

Another Harrison Ford movie? Yes!!

I played Tomb Raider when I was younger (so I should watch Tomb Raider movies at some point), but I can see how Tomb Raider was heavily inspired by Indiana Jones.

I can see how the tone would have felt very different had I seen this when I was younger, which always fascinates me how a movie can be seen so differently depending on when someone watches it.

10/10 would recommend this movie to others!

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  You can set picture in picture by right clicking twice on the video and selecting "Picture in picture". The right clicking twice is a bit tricky, because you have to right click, then move your cursor so it's not on the menu, then right click again

Thank you so much everyone for your support, I couldn't do this without you 🥰

Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Comments

Indiana Jones and Robert McCall are very different kinds of protagonists. Equalizer is a VERY different tone, and the amount of death isn't comparable. Typically a movie that is more light hearted and fun tends to have a protagonist that doesn't kill as much :)

Verowak

Ahh ok! Raiders feels over the top, but at the same time, it seems like that was a popular style in the 80s

Verowak

I do believe that most franchises die a hero, or live long enough to become the villain. A big reason that I love mini/limited series is that they tell a story succinctly, and don't continue on with sequels or too many seasons where the show loses its appeal. Unforgiven and Tombstone are two movies that I need to squeeze in somehow lol

Verowak

I enjoyed the reaction to this movie. I remember watching this movie back in the day. I was in the navy overseas at the time and watched this with a bunch of marines at the Yokosuka Naval base in Japan. A lot of uh-rah-ing going on. It was great. I'm not a big fan of movie franchises and this movie franchise is one of the main reasons I feel that way. I'm not crazy about the sequels to this but I can see why people like them. That silhouette shot you were talking about was really good. There is one very much like that in the movie Unforgiven with Clint Eastwood. Really fantastic shot.

Scott Howard

I think Luke Skywalker has them all beat. How many people were on the Death Star??? 😉

Chris Gronau

@Verowak Ummm, "not used to . . ."? What?? 🤔🤨 (checks Vero's online spreadsheet) I don't think Indy's kill count compares to Robert McCall's or John McClane's 😏 Paul Kersey anyone? Dinner reservations for 12? We really need to get you watching more "classic" movies 😈

I'd agree. The 4th Indy movie isn't that juvenile, just enough to undercut it and ruin the movie. A certain amount of wackiness can be a good thing in a movie, if it's used to cut the tension. However, inserting wackiness just for the sake of being wacky usually doesn't work (and certainly didn't work in Indy 4...). Having said that, I still say that Indy 4 wasn't that bad of a movie. Just a far cry from the quality of the first 3.

Ah, I think my comment was maybe a little vague. I meant for the NEXT Indiana Jones movie, "Temple of Doom" (which I hope you watch), Spielberg goes way over the top, even more than he did with Raiders. As "extra" as Raiders of the Lost Ark is, "Temple of Doom" makes it seem grounded and restrained.

The fifth Indiana Jones film suffers from the same problems the latest Jurassic Park/World movie and the third Antman film.. someone decided that it would be clever to bring all previous characters in for max appeal. Had more thoughts, but our power just went out. Meh! Paradise 🙄 Was going to add that the CGI de-aging is distracting and the character the studio was maybe introducing to carry on the franchise is underwhelming. And in case you’ve missed it, there’s an interesting and relevant podcast called Land of the Giants which is currently covering Disney. Latest episode walks through the transformation from an animation studio to a theme park company to a streaming service. Their purchase of Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars. Their desperate desire to max return and losing the magic along the way. Nothing you haven’t already guessed, but self affirmation is always nice.

The Mummy and Lara Croft movies are definitely some that I want to see!

Verowak

As a kid, I'm sure I would have been scared many times too. The only movies I go in with expectations are comedies, since a lot of them just aren't my style, or if I've seen a previous director's movie and disliked it, then I have low expectations for the next movie of theirs that I watch (which can end up as a bonus if the movie is overall not great, not terrible). It is nice to see a director do varying genres and styles. Like you said he cranked everything up to an 11, which is not what I expect, but it was a very pleasant and fun surprise!

Verowak

I'd argue that indy 4 is not that juvenile, just a bit over the top.. Also, the last Thor film was utter tripe, and that's coming from someone who likes Taika Watiti!

I'm just not used to the main character being so violent, but I like it! I really do love how Marion was an integral part of the movie, too! I think the propeller is an Indy kill, that's how I count it at least lol. The first ten minutes does a fantastic job at setting up the story, great way to introduce the main character and villain!

Verowak

Now I know what that references, and they did such a good job!! 🤣

Verowak

Noted! I do know George Clooney is in a prisoner uniform of some kind in that one. I won't look anything up before seeing it though lol

Verowak

Oh no.. wacky and juvenile is a terrible combination for me. That's how I felt about the newest Thor movie, but it was turned up to an 11 when the scale only goes to 10 😅

Verowak

Similar movies that I think you would enjoy: "The Mummy" (1999 version) "Romancing the Stone" (1984) "Lara Croft" (2001 version) "The Mask of Zorro" (1998 version) "Legend of the Lost" (1957)

Indiana was strongly modeled on the character Allan Quartermain, which was made and remade in many movies over the 20th c. The best were: "King Solomon's Mines" (1985) "Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold" (1986) both with Richard Chamberlain as Allan Quartermain and the earlier: "King Solomon's Treasure" (1979) w/ David McCallum

JAKH

Good Harrison Ford movies: "The Fugitive" (1993) based on a TV show "Six Days, Seven Nights" (1998) "Bladerunner" (1982) from a story by Philip K. Dick "Force 10 From Navarone" (1978) sequel to "The Guns of Navarone" (1961) "Witness" (1985)

I haven't seen the 5th, but the 4th suffered from the same problem as the Star Wars prequels. George Lucas was co-creator of Indiana Jones (along with Steven Spielberg), which meant he owned half the rights to the character. No one was going to make an Indiana Jones movie without his blessing, and by the time they made the 4th movie, Lucas was only interested in making wacky kids movies. So, Lucas was not going to allow them to make anything unless it was wacky and juvenile.... That being said, the 4th movie isn't bad. It's just not nearly as good as it could have been if they'd been allowed to take the character seriously.

I'm glad you liked this. It made quite a stir when it came out. The first ten minutes had more action than most action movies had in their entire runtime. You mentioned that Indy kills a lot of people in this movie, but you can make a reasonable argument that Marion kills more people than Indy. Marion shoots one of the thugs in the bar in Nepal and kills 8 German soldiers with the airplane's machine gun during the airplane sequence. Total kill count 9. Indy kills one the thugs in the bar in Nepal. He and a Nepalese thug cooperate to kill a German thug (after Tote tells the German thug to shoot both of them). Indy shoots the swordsman in the marketplace and kills two thugs in the "Marion" truck full of explosives. He runs over one German sergeant with the truck containing the Ark and runs a jeep off a cliff (containing 3 German soldiers). Total kill count 8 1/2. After that, things get a little fuzzy. Marion brained the airplane pilot with the wheel chocks. He later died when the plane blew up. Is that a kill for Marion? The bald mechanic died when the propeller hit him. Does that count as a kill for Indy (who was fighting him at the time), Marion (who was at the controls for the airplane) or neither? A bunch of Germans are thrown from vehicles during the truck chase, but it's not clear if any of them die. Still, it's nice to see that Marion is just as capable of holding her own as the hero. 😁

Well this was unexpected. Regarding the impact this movie has on a younger person: I saw this movie when I was like 5 or 6, and frankly it scared the bejeezus out of me. Not just the ending, but in multiple moments throughout. I don't know if you plan on seeing the follow-up, Temple of Doom, but if you do - I honestly think it's one of the most underrated movies ever. I don't want to spoil anything, but Doom got a lot of criticism for various reasons. A lot of people outright dislike it. (So maybe adjust expectations accordingly?) That said, I think it's the Indy movie that I watched the most as a kid. For better or for worse, Spielberg goes totally over the top, cranking everything up to an 11. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's kind of refreshing to see a filmmaker just go "screw it," and throw caution to the wind. I also think it's one of the most charismatic and "all in" performances Harrison Ford has ever given. (Though I do think he's been great in a lot of things, and in many ways is an underrated actor.)

Completely off topic but another film I'd highly recommend if you haven't seen it already is 'O Brother, Where Art Thou'. Top tier which takes inspiration from Homer's 'The Odyssey' and/or James Joyce's 'Ulysses'.

jim Howe

4th is something i don't hate but don't love.. just "meh". 5th film.. turned it off, but I wasn't in the mood to be fair. Still haven't gone back to to it.

jim Howe

What about the 4th and 5th? 😅

Verowak

Brilliant film! And much like Die Hard 3... the third film is my favourite overall!
